I’m just going from the Google translation and asking ChatGPT about the wording, but I think those are presented as a non-exhaustive list of examples in the Chinese version, no?

任何人不得以國籍、種族、膚色、階級、出生地等因素,對居住於臺灣地區之人民為歧視之行為。

If so, I’d try to argue that “place of first education” is an extension of where the person was born. I doubt this is intended as discrimination though - more likely just them simply not thinking that Taiwanese can go to school outside Taiwan, combined with shitty form design.

I’m trying to think of a reasonable reason why they’d ask which elementary school you went to… can’t really think of one other than to see whether you grew up locally or Taiwanese born abroad / grew up abroad

Aside from as a security question, isn’t it just that they’re nosy about this stuff in Taiwan?

I wonder though - are they really checking whether the school name is correct as someone suggested above, or just looking for Chinese characters? It seems unnecessary to do the latter (checking against a list of schools in Taiwan), and if the latter I’d have thought you could just make something up.

From what I’ve heard, it more a “security-question” thing in case one needs to prove their identity on the phone. I recently opened a credit card and wrote my elementary school (outside Taiwan) in English letters.

Well, future-me might need to run into the issue of not knowing the exact spelling (did I use an abbreviation somewhere? Maybe a dash…? After which character did they cut off the name…?) in case I ever need to call the bank about that credit card…

Yeah, I do that pretty often too. My elementary school is one I can always remember (though it’s pretty long and inconvenient to type in), but remembering who I said my favorite author or whatever was several years prior always throws me. :man_shrugging:

Could use something like 英國國小 , 外國國小,or something to bypass that

No I believe that whoever wrote the code were not thinking there are citizens who are did not go to elementary school in Taiwan.

Reminds me about a conversion I had with the hotline of a home internet provider hotline a while back in Germany:

They: “Now we still need your customer password!”
Me (being confused about what the heck that is): “Customer password?”
They: “Correct!”
Me: “???”

Apparently, I had just (literally) written “customer password” as the customer password on some form :man_shrugging:

某個國小,幹你屁事

not the Immigration Act, would say more the Financial Consumer Protection Act art. 7 since they are going against the principles of reasonableness and fairness. I.e. it is unreasonable and unfair to assume all citizens must have been schooled in a local school, and if not just outright not letting them sign-up since the form can’t take foreign names.

And anyways I still don’t see a reasonable request to know your primary school, what the heck is that? What’s the rationale behind that for KYC and risk assessment???

I asked them why the sudden change of attitude, and one of the guys told me:
“有一位 VIP 把我們的銀行投訴了”

cool

Was it perhaps our very own Forumosa residents aka “Taiwan Bank’s worst nightmare” @Mataiou or @comfy123? :+1: :grinning:

Maybe, well, complaining directly to a bit shot helps haha.

Happy to help

although the complaint of the credit was made directly to the FOI after my failed complaint to the bank. I haven’t met any high executive of the bank at that time yet.

So now I have HSBC and DBS on my belt haha, I also complained to the FOI with Xin Kong (anyone who applied with them recently?) some time ago.

I have a card with Shinkong without guarantor, got it over 8 years ago with a lot of bitching and then to the FSC. They got me back by giving a low credit limit though

petty morons… Got 200k with them, just got their JAL JCB card.

But you see that is much better than asking for a guarantor.

and, also, it is possible to ask to increase the limit.

I already did that with Fubon and CTBC, both cases granted (fubon they agreed with my request to increase to 200k, CTBC brought from 20k to 100k, now at least can use the china airlines card to book a flight with the discount if need be, before it was unusable).

Yup they gave me 30k. I also got an increase to 250K the same as Fubon gave me with not being asked to provide any income documents. CTBC are hopeless… they ask you to download a PDF for you account but you cannot upload PDF files. I was given a special link with my name on it to upload PDF files to.

Sir, I would like to hire you as my representative in these matters.

Payment: all the pizza you want, at the venue of your choice!
