Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

Not comfy but I have that card. If you are already a customer usually they just automatically approve you with no fuss. If it’s been a month, someone either lost your app or they are just slow.

I guess they are slow. It is just the guy said processing took 4 days…

I’d give them a quick phone call to see what’s up. Best way to submit a credit card application though is to scan it and email it. There is no need for a physical application and all banks including Esun need to open it for everyone.

Also what’s this 40% off at carrefour??? I never heard of it! It sounds awesome! I might get one!

Is it? It seems like it is 20% return with a maximum of 40 NTD (coupon) and 1 time per day… So you’d have to go there pretty often and buy no more than 499NTD worth of things for it to be worth it.

I suggest just using the 2% citibank cashback card. That one is my go to card and I just live my life and forget about the discounts until I decide to check it and discover 5,000NTD in cashback that goes towards my bill for the month

Does Citibank also have a deal with Carrefour?

No, but the 2% cashback applies to everything

so, had to cancel the eva air visa infinite supreme card by cathay united since they do not waive or refund any of the 20K annual fee… Got a headsup and cancelled before the statement kicks in, so they didn’t charge it (they do it with the 3rd statement) and applied now to the lower tier, which comes with a more reasonable 2.4K fee.

Apparently cobranded airlines cards cannot be waived since the bank basically pays the airline the have the brand and the collaboration, so no flexibility, I guess other cards can do whatever they want.

Just an update: we finally received our credit cards yesterday. 2 Momo cards and one JPay. So took about 2.5 weeks from our updated application and maybe ~5 weeks since our original application. They also spoke to us about our credit limit which is only 80k. They were very apologetic about it and said we can look at a few ways of increasing that limit. (Honestly I don’t care, we don’t expect to use these cards very often) One of the things mentioned was depositing 1M NTD to become VIP, which to be honest seems quite low for “VIP” status. Especially since they mentioned some savings instruments that offer 8% interest. Of course it’s just VIP, not VVIP.

Wow! That’s more than my Chase Sapphire Reserve! What benefits would it have included??! Had no idea Taiwanese cards came with such high fees.

It is a very special card, only other 2 this expensive (besides the usual know Amex Platinum charge card) are the Chinatrust China Airlines Visa Infinite ultimate card and the Citi Prestige.

The main perk is unlimited lounge access via dragon pass (which has now a larger network than Priority Pass), discounts on any booking to the related airlines (10% for EVA), the Chinatrust gives you instant silver status with China airlines no matter what and basically the best miles accrual rate you can get, with hefty renewal and sign-up bonuses.

They are expensive, but the perks imo justify the fee if you use all the perks as often you can. Missus unfortunately was not of this opinion and force me to downgrade.

The lower tier cards indeed forego the unlimited “free” lounge access and replace with discounted lounge fees (fair prices, around 15USD per time for 3 hrs use), slightly worse miles rate (1 miles per NTD 22 expense instead of NTD 20) and smaller discounts on airfare (5%).

Just requested a credit limit increase for my Amex. Less than 24 hours for a response and a 50% increase to my credit limit.
I provided last years blue tax paper as well as my labor insurance documents proving my current salary (as I get handwritten BS payslips). I didn’t provide a bank statement.

The credit limit is about 2x last years declared monthly salary and I’ve had the card for about a year and a half.

2x your annual salary? Monthly I’m guessing?

The Taiwanese I know keep money in multiple banks because of previous bank failures and losing money. So the VIP thing is just to encourage people to keep more money with the bank.

Yep, monthly salary

Oh that’s interesting! I had no idea such cards existed in Taiwan. Is there a bonus on foreign transactions as well? What’s even more curious is that it offers status on China Airlines and discounts on EVA.

Oh wow I see. They aren’t insured or govt backed? We’re with Fubon so they seem to have a long track record.

there is. It is convoluted (as always in TW), but in certain scenarios with the Eva air card you can get as low as NTD 10 per mile for overseas transactions. This happens only if you fly Eva (round trip) for that trip and register the trip on a special portal of the bank (the website is kinda hidden in the fineprint of the T&Cs), otherwise is normally a still very good NTD 15 per mile.

The silver status on China Airlines with the Chinatrust card is valid for 2 years, no questions asked.

The discounts on airfare is only valid if you use Eva’s website or mobile app and preselect the discount when booking the flights (only for round trips, no multicity/stopover or one-way) and it is working only on the TW website (both in ENG and Chinese).

Apparently the Costco credit card is changing from Cathay United to Fubon Bank next year.

Does that mean Cathay will just change everyone to a different card type or cancel the cards?

I posted an application for the citibank 2% cashback card on Thursday, I haven’t heard anything yet.

I mentioned way earlier how I’ve got an ESun credit card and a bank of Taiwan one. Neither of which I use.

I didn’t quite believe the stories about how difficult people have found getting them until one of the people I work with saw I had both. And her jaw dropped when she saw the ESun one.

So it seems ESun aren’t just difficult to foreigners but also locals.

In any case most banks in Taiwan view foreigners as transitory which is why they don’t care about providing services to them.

I think people have difficulty because they go to the branch. If you post the application, with all supporting documents, and don’t talk to anyone it’s much easier.

I have 2 cards and both were issued without much fuss. I posted both applications

The branch staff have this weird thing where they think their job is to refuse rather than provide services.
