Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

Oh yeah I agree with that. I got pulled up in a branch for depositing coins. I think there was about $80,000 worth of coins over a few weeks. They started asking me questions about where I was getting them from. My answer of “stuffed fat pigs at home” didn’t go down well. So I had to show them photos of piggy banks filled to the brim.

I recently did that but with about $7,000 worth of coins. I assumed someone at the bank would do that. Luckily, the PX mart across from my house has an ATM with a coin counter

I avoid bank branches at all costs. They ALWAYS make everything harder. And I hate being treated like a criminal at banks cos I’m blue eyed with blonde hair and fair skin. The same could be said of anyone who doesn’t look Taiwanese though.

Me and my wife both applied for that same card in branch 18 days ago. There was about a week and a half delay before they sent the application to their credit card team because we had to supply more documents, but since then we haven’t heard much. My wife got a call from the credit card center checking that she actually applied about a week ago, but I haven’t heard anything.

What documents did you provide? I can’t provide payslips cos I get handwritten rubbish ones and my bank statements aren’t helpful as I keep my savings in my Australian bank account and get paid in cash.

I provided last years blue tax paper, passport copy, ARC copy, household registration, credit history report, labor insurance docs showing my current insured income, death insurance policy doc.

If they aren’t happy with that or ask for a guarantor I won’t bother

I tried to provide pay slips that I printed from my bank’s website, but they wouldn’t accept them. Instead they made me scan my bank passbook.

I also tried to give last year’s tax statement but they wouldn’t take it either because that tax statement did not include earnings from the company I work for now.

I’ve mostly given up on the card now, I think they probably just trashed my application.

Does your application show up when you use this link?

I mostly want a decent cashback card and PX Mart is opposite my apartment so it seems like a good option.

I use my amex as my primary card but it’s not as widely accepted. I use the cathay costco card when I can’t use amex but the benefits aren’t that great.

My experience was the opposite, I recieved polite and friendly service in the branch, but was rejected.
I tried Citi Bank twice (2 different branches) and First Bank one time.

苗栗國 has it’s own rules I guess

And yet, any Taiwanese office worker making 40K a month can get that card just by showing their ID card. That is sharing a lot of personal info for 2% cashback.I would send them to go stuff themselves…

I thought so too but I thought the lack of payslips and bank statement would make things harder. I also wanted to avoid a call for extra docs. Although standard practice seems to be to ask for unnecessary docs.

Even when I increased the limit of my Amex they called to ask for the blue tax paper even though I had already sent it to them. They just wanted to say ‘oh yeah I can see it’

It annoys me when they ask for a Taiwanese guarantor because they always ask for my husband. I earn more than double my husband and have better credit than him so it’s totally illogical. I just refuse.

absolutely right, I always post my applications, I don’t even bother going to the branch. If all the docs are in order, they might just call you to confirm you applied, that’s it.

Only card I might be interested for Esun @JPMichaels1 is the carrefour one, but since carrefour is basically closing down next year, not much of an incentive to apply… Bank of Taiwan has nothing of interest for me.

I hate it, so much discriminatory. Had the same issue with HSBC… I receive my salary at HSBC and I am Premier, they still refused to waive the guarantor requirement even if I make more than double the required minimum salary for the card I wanted.

Useless.

Yep! And my husband also has Australian permanent residency so he could nick of just as easily as me. No security for the bank whatsoever.

10 years ago HSBC made exceptions for foreigners with premier… they did not need a guarantor but everyone else did, even advance clients. Guess that ‘loophole’ was closed up

Does yours?

This generally works for all banks but will NOT work for government banks. If you post in their applications directly to places like Taiwan Bank, Cooperative bank, or Land Bank for example, they will send it back to you or to your local branch. I tried it a few times, no go for foreigners. Luckily there are private banks that will

I got the same error but yesterday and earlier this morning it said that it couldn’t find anything with my details and it should take 7-10 days

I’ll try again later, and also get my wife to try with hers.

This is so true!!! My Taiwanese colleague just recently applied for the 2% cashback online, he got the card in a week’s time along with the free Apple Airpods. He didn’t have to provide anything, just received a call to make sure he sent in the application. Our boss reports his minimum income for tax purposes (NT$25250).
