the eva miles are transferable to other star alliance carriers ?
Not transferrable, but you can redeem flights or upgrades with other star alliances members (with different rates and availability).
In this regard the dbs world fly card and the hsbc traveller infinite card are much superior since they give a slightly better accrual rate per NT and you can convert the points to miles with different airlines (china airlines, eva, singapore all included, if I remember well also cathay pacific)
Well, got notification also my Mega bank credit card has been approved. No account with them, no guarantor, applied for the one ipass mastercard via post. Mega is one of the four banks that has “special handling” for Employment Gold Card holders, but I didn’t apply for the one recommended.
The process was very smooth and I could check my application status online.
Is there a good overview on which credit card is good for collecting miles? China Airlines and EVA are both ok. Thanks a lot in advance.
there are few choices, 3 are multi-airlines, 3 are airline specific. Not going to consider the ANA, JAL and Asia miles cards.
HSBC travellers cards are very good to collect miles and then convert to multiple miles programmes (Eva, China airlines, Singapore, Asia miles all included) but HSBC is really bad to give cards to foreigners, guarantors are required. Even if you are Premier!
DBS flying World cards are basically the same as HSBC travellers, Haven’t tried DBS yet, so can’t comment on their policies.
Citi Premiermiles (or even fancier, the prestige) are similar to the ones above but have some stupid restrictions on foreign spending eligible to accrue miles, and soon Citi will close shop since is being acquired by DBS.
Amex Eva Air charge cards, can accrue miles only with Eva and have some discounts in business class fares and discounted Eva lounge access when flying Eva (the platinum already comes with full priority pass and amex centurion lounges access). You can even apply online for these and if you have an amex in another jurisdiction they take that into consideration.
Cathay United Eva Air cards, depending on the tier you apply, you can get full lounge access via dragon pass, access to eva lounges regardless of class, very good accrual rates, only for eva and give you also 5-10% discount on eva airfare if you book directly via eva tw website.
CTBC China Airlines, the top tier card gives you Gold status immediately for 2 years (Skyteam elite), variable discounts on airfare with china airlines only and other benefits.
I personally have amex eva gold card and cathay eva visa infinite card
2% cashback sounds good. Is that the best deal out there in terms of cashbacks?
I’ve tried to create a chart with the best Taiwan credit cards for each category but gave up. It’s like collecting pokemon - you need to get them all since each merchant in Taiwan seems to have exclusive partnerships with a different bank.
Have any of you applied for a CTBC credit card via post?
Did they make you go into the bank to do anything?
thanks for the great response
Did anyone applying try making a complaint to the FSC like I did with Esun and change their policy? Why does everyone just bend over?
Woah!! Rich man ![]()
I don’t think it’s about bending over. It’s about how much effort your willing to put in and how much you want something.
If I can get a product from a competitor with no fuss, then I’ll just go to a competitor.
If I just kind of want something but it’s not worth the fuss, I won’t bother.
If I really want something and I can’t get it from a competitor then I’ll make all the fusses and complaints with whoever I need to until I get it.
It’s just never really come to this for me.
That’s why I’m willing to support anyone else putting up the fight but the effort vs reward for me isn’t there to start a fight myself.
I hate the discriminatory practices here but I’ve always been able to get my way eventually. It sucks that it’s so hard.
I don’t think Esun has changed their policy nationwide, perhaps only for you. Their site still says the same thing and the branch i went to aren’t aware of any new rules
Their site was updated and some friends reported that an option to pay the minimum balance recently appeared
Updated site: Foreigner area - 玉山銀行
Old page: Foreigner area - 玉山銀行
Note the old page clearly has their old policy “This credit card does not have cash advance and revolving credit options. Cardholder must pay the total amount payment monthly.”
On the new page it was updated to “1.Passport, Taiwan Travel Permit for Mainland Residents, the entry/exit permit issued by the National Immigration Agency and residence permit must be valid for more than six months.”
I would guess it is outdated. They updated the main page.
Also if you look at the template of the website you will see it doesn’t match the newer design
Thanks @comfy123.
So with these new rules, do I still have to set up an E.Sun account, and a direct debit to pay the bill?
No. There is no need to now ![]()
Okay, cool. I’ll go in and challenge them on monday then. Any chance you can share the branch you applied with so I can get them to call and check with them if they give me issues?
Tell them that you have a good credit history (if you have one) and other credit cards. High income etc… and any problem to tell them contact 馮志順 (Caspar Feng) employee 00497 senior manager of Credit Card and Payment Division at head office Taipei immediately to clarify the new policy and train their untrained staff.
Caspar is a really nice guy and is really good.
Just be blunt. It is shameful that those staff were oblivious to the new policy. I don’t think it’s his fault but rather the managers of those branches. - Tell the manager that you make a formal complaint against the staff that stated incorrect information and tell them that there is no excuse.
