I noticed that the cash advance function came on to my account, before they didn’t allow it for foreigners. If I remember it was your complaint that fixed that too, if so thanks. I don’t use that function but they shouldn’t take it away in the first place.
It was and you’re welcome mate!
I never use it either but it is a function of a normal credit card and we should have it regardless.
@meishijia here is another confirmation
That’s the thing. I never stop at them making an exception for myself. I always make it very clear that I intend for this not to happen to the next person. We are all in this together!
Has anyone applied successfully for the Cube by Cathay?
No but I got a letter from them saying they’ll automatically switch me to Cube when their contract with Costco finishes
I’ve had their card since they took over Costco from Chinatrust way back when. Haven’t received anything. Yet.
My current Cathay bank Costco card expires in 27. Technically speaking they should honor the contract with me, even if their association with Costco is gone. Or at least, that’s my argument.
I got the letter too about 2 weeks back saying they will automatically reissue me a Cube card.
Yes, see:
I’ve just reported to the FSC, but have little faith something will happen.
From my experience they are pretty helpful but I suspect it isn’t so much that they are any threat to the banks but moreso that it is a loss of face to the bank that a client had to go to the FSC.
I’ve told specific banks before that if they don’t stop discriminating I will contact the FSC. One bank rep said ‘ok do it.’ I think they figured I was just blowing smoke. Within a few days a manager was calling.
Which bank did you report?
I was going to challenge them on that but became busy all of a sudden.
How did that go?
HSBC. Attached their application form in Chinese showing that the guarantor requirement is not optional and only for foreigners.
let’s see, with the online banks didn’t go well at all, FSC just gave us the middle finger and said 沒辦法。
On Sunday I started feeling ill and my rapid test was positive. I’m allowed out again this Sunday
My successes have been with me as an existing customer and them trying to change the terms on me. I think for them it’s easier than trying to change an entire discriminatory policy.
I suspect HSBC will bend on this one for you
I tried this way, they came back with the following: if you deposit 500K NTD we will waive the guarantor requirement. I gave them the finger (figuratively) and said if they don’t let me apply and review like a normal taiwanese (as stated in the law) I will go to the financial ombudsman.
I’ve tried to create a chart with the best Taiwan credit cards for each category but gave up. It’s like collecting pokemon - you need to get them all since each merchant in Taiwan seems to have exclusive partnerships with a different bank.
Have you tried Huanan? A few years ago one of their tellers was actively trying to get me, an obvious tall nose, to sign up for one of their credit cards.
The only bank I remember having this issue with was Chinatrust albeit a long time ago. They wanted to see $200k in the account for a few months before they would approve but it didn’t have to be with them.
In other news, I got an email saying my new Carrefour card is approved. Now, we keep on waiting…
Did you ever receive the card?
I started the application process in my local Carrefour and it seems they do their best to discourage furriners from applying, a million questions before even starting the application form and the final kicker insisting the form must be signed in your Chinese name with Chinese characters (stamp is out as they are “a very traditional bank”). Got through everything and the guy then made a phone call and added the requirement for a photocopy of my passport as an APRC wasn’t enough, when I obviously didn’t have it on me he handed back the application form and insisted that going to the local bank branch “would be better”. Only wanted the card to avail of cheaper/free parking but they’ve annoyed me enough that I may have to go to the local branch for an afternoons entertainment,
