Credit Cards for Foreigners - General Discussion

Hi, everyone. I just got my first Taiwan credit card from E.Sun. I didn’t even have an account with them, so I wasn’t asked to auto-debit. You may also want to try your luck with them. For the referral application, you can click on this link. I got mine after two weeks, and the credit limit is double my gross monthly salary.

Requirements:

  • Photocopy of passport
  • Photocopy of residence permit
  • Photocopy of financial capacity- salary slip(in the past three months), payroll transfer/demand deposit passbook(containing the pages with your account number, account activities in the past three months), Tax Withholding Certificate/income statement (in the past year) or time deposit certificate.

Cube 集精選 category (includes Carrefour and PXMart) is devalued by a third (3% → 2%) starting today. In terms of EVA miles, it’s now no different than the HSBC traveler cards. So much for my exclusive grocery shopping card.

Damn, I used to use Cube for international travel due to the 3% cashback on flight tickets and international transactions.

What are the best cards out there for international travel these days? Willing to split airline mileage (mostly EVA) and on-the-ground transactions, if that makes things easier.

It’s still 3% for your purpose though, assuming you’re “level 2”.

Cathay’s Eva air card, DBS world flying card, HSBC travellers’ infinite, Amex platinum credit (not the charge card). If for china airlines, then CTBC china airlines card. Amex Eva air platinum/gold cards have shabby accrual rates, but good perks (especially the platinum)

Meaning I need to open an account at Cathay bank?

Looks like it. I already have one so I’m automatically level 2 this month.

The Cathay United Shopee card has no Foreign Transaction Fees, at least until August 31. Let’s see if they keep extending that offer (which I recall them routinely doing in the past).

Not for 集精選 (the category that includes Carrefour and PXMart). For that category, being Level 2 or 3 doesn’t affect the percentage of cash back, which is still 2%.

How’s amex plat credit better than the charge? Isn’t the accrual rate the same? I’m thinking of getting the plat charge for the initial bonus :joy:

Edit: nvm i saw, the cc is 18.75/mile at best

Different products. What u earn more on the CC you lose in perks.

I use JKO pay at carrefour with my hsbc cashback card for 3%

As for PX mart I’m yet to know of an alternative

What I really care about are the miles, and this option is only slightly better. Cathay “little tree points” are convertable to eva miles at a rate of 1:2.778, while the HSBC cashback card earnings are only 1:2. This translates to 5.55 miles/100$ with the cube card (and HSBC traveler card) and 6 miles/100$ with this JKOpay indirect method. Can’t be bothered to go through all that trouble for such a small benefit.

HSBC diamond card when u use Jko pay gives standard 3% cashback points, which you can then actually convert to airmiles, and if you happen to have an account with them with more than 300k the conversion rate goes to 6%. That like (I did long time ago the calcs) almost a TWD 3 per mile!

I’m also using the jkopay method, it’s $16.7/mile, better than my traveller’s domestic $18/mile.

From what I saw it was normal conversion 1:2 to miles, or the special doubling but only to cash. Can it also be used to double miles?

Still probably won’t do it; need 5000 points to double so at 3% it would require spending 166,667$ before it’s unlocked. It would probably take me over two years to spend that much on this one card.

Yup, another way of expressing the same thing.

Just using that at 7-11 and where already can’t use mile earning cards

HSBC made their own version of Cube
