Curse of olympic mascots

juicy gossip this side of the strait:
olympic mascot curse

beijing olympics has five cute mascots. china has five calamities befall it this year.

one mascot is a shandong kite. china had one nasty train collision in SHANDONG.
one mascot is a tibetian antelope. china had the tibet riots.
one mascot is fire. china had the torch grabbing incident.
one mascot is a panda (from sichuan). the nasty earthquake was in sichuan.
one mascot is water. chin ais having its worst flooding in 50 years.

i guess you can be thankful that they didn’t use taiwan binglan for #6.

they’ve still got another few months to cop another set of calamities, so the ‘curse of coincidence’ is bound to be broken.

bummer about the floods and the earthquake, but the rest is of their own making…

This is a good topic. Here’s another article :Da Curse

The curse of peasants chasing me round Beijing trying to get 100kuai out of me for such monumentally pointless items as mascots.

‘I’m sorry, I don’t have any children.’
'‘THEY’RE NOT FOR CHILDREN! THEY’RE OLYMPIC MASCOTS!’
‘Whatever, I’m going to Cha for Tea.’

It’s official:

Major calamities, earthquakes in particular, were viewed in imperial China as a sign that a dynasty had lost the mandate of Heaven.[/quote]

No kidding! I take it with a grain of salt and contained glee -not at the calamities, of course, but at the official fear of what their happening would mean. :smiling_imp:

Mascots are a desperate attempt to substitute cute for just plain evil.

greatest olympic flop ever? unsold hotel rooms, people can’t get visas…

But there again, isn’t a major part of the Chinese economy based on speculation that such and such will be successful?

I think there is bound to be a huge slowdown there in a few years, and if you aren’t already there or doing business… you have missed the boat

yay: roll on the olympics in egg on face. this will be rich!

Fuwas of Doom.

That’s a nice title for a movie.

Omnious omens on all sides, folks:
:runaway:

Or rather:

All rightie, then…
