I’ve been having this problem for MONTHS:
Aside from the internet constantly going in and out, pretty much any useful website for foreigners here has been blocked. This includes Forumosa, Tealit, etc. Most of the time it simply wont let me enter the site, saying something about being on the list of blocked sites (thankfully now I know this since I downloaded Chrome, which translates) But recently I’ve been able to partly use them, while being blocked at almost every turn inside the sites.
A quick search tells me that I need to reset the router, I’ve had good reason to believe for a while that my boyfriend (a Taiwanese guy with whom things haven’t been right for a long time) was purposely meddling, but realistically I don’t see how he could.
I’ve called Chung Hwa and they just told me they reset it, and that it should work
If all these sites are being blocked, they’re being blocked at your end. So if it isn’t YOU doing the blocking, its someone with access to your computer, I’d say. And I am a tech GURU. You only have to ask Mablis.
Shit. I just wrote a reply on here not long ago, and now I check and all that’s left of it is the letter “m” Hmm…
Bascially what I’d said is that boyfriend is leaps ahead of me in tech-savvy, and would never ever admit to anything deceitful unless caught red-handed, and even then no guarantee. Needless to say, I’ve been trying to leave him for a while. However, we share the same computer and it’s all in Chinese, so being able to communicate with the outside world has been fraught with peril. He got all pissed off when I called Chungwa to try to fix the problem (which means he has promised to but failed for way too long) and now things are very tense in the house.
Time to change all my passwords, again.
There should be a small reset button on the back of the router, but it also means you need to log in to the router’s setup page (usually 192.168.1.1 in a web browser) to set things up again. Or you could log in and see what sites are blocked and simply remove them from said interface.
It looks as if D-link doesn’t block them but your boyfriend … I would know what to do if I were you … paranoid boyfriends are not an option.
What happens if the router has a password on the menu? Is there away to reset it and pretend nothing happened?
Boyfriend sound like a turd
Here’s a few things to consider but really the best advice is check for a keylogger and run a portable browser so he can’t access ANY historical browsing data.
Just make sure initially you’re browsing in incognito mode so he cannot peruse your history. That’s a minimum. There’s always a chance he has a keylogger installed as well. If he’s petty enough to block sites then he’s probably mental enough to try and get your passwords. If you can avoid using this computer then do so. If that isn’t an option then run in incognito mode and try these instructions out.
Download and run this to be on the safe side dewasoft.com/privacy/kldetector.htm
It’ll tell you if he’s running a keylogger. If he isn’t then stick to incognito mode in chrome and move onto the next stage. If he is then punch him for massive invasion of privacy and threaten to go to the police or summat - Don’t know the legal standpoint in Taiwan on Keyloggers - sorry
For the next step you’ll need a usb stick. If you dont have one then go to a 7/11 and get one.
Download a portable instance of chrome from here portableapps.com/apps/internet/g … e_portable
and install it on the usb stick (or if you dont have a usb stick on anything that plugs in via usb and has accessible memory. - dead easy really I have about 10 must have apps I run from a usb stick when neccessary.
Once installed it runs it as an executable from wherever you install it instead of from within the OS properly. So basically when you close the browser and unplug the usb stick there’s no way the lil sod can check your history or change the settings as he doesn’t have access to the app. If it still doesn’t work then let us know and we’ll suggest further workarounds as he’s making changes to the OS or via firewall.
Here’s the link to the portable app again portableapps.com/apps/internet/g … e_portable
N.B. If you are using wifi then yes there should be a reset button on the back of the router. Little black button but it resets everything. Factory default is usually no encryption and the default admin name and password are usually on the base of the device. If it’s a wired Modem then resetting it probably won’t do squat.
It does sound like he’s messing you up locally though. Best of luck.
Oh if none of that works then you can try and google for the default settings like username and password for your routers model but he will realise that you’ve changed the settings for sure - use a proxy site if none of the above works. Heres a few - you just enter the url of the site you want to view and access through that site - some of them support youtube as well. Not the best solution but if all else fails then do this. It’s how school kids get around porn filters and such like at school

Sorry if some of them are crap - I’m having to rush a response to you. I’m busy but stuff like this really winds me up. Good luck
if you continue to have problems, give me a call, i can reset or help you reset the device to factory settings, upgrade the unit to english and configure it to your needs and passwords. prior to calling, get the model and rev number from the bottom of the unit.
the bottom should look similar to this

The obvious long-term answer to this is very non-technical. Reset your D-Link of a boyfriend.
LOL, if only he came with a reset function! Though I don’t think his factory settings are much better…
Thanks all for your helpful responses; Fortunately it’s been up and working again for a record two days, and will hopefully stay that way for the time being. I will definitely refer back to this thread if it happens again.
If he was actually blocking it before, it could be that he decided to give up that game once he saw I was reaching out for help and that he would quickly lose face if he didn’t. Either that or he actually fixed the problem himself for the same reasons. :loco:
Looking forward to a life less complicated.
