College baseball is not a money sport, but take a look at where all the national champions are located. All in warm-weathered parts of the country, with Oregon State standing out like a sore thumb.
This is why Taiwan should be better at baseball than it is. Spring training is held in Florida and Arizona for a reason, the same reason Japanese and Korean leagues hold their spring training in Taiwan (or Australia or Vietnam). You can play baseball year-round in Taiwan; can’t in Japan or Korea. This kind of geographical endowment is unbeatable.
I was also reading in Soccernomics about how two-thirds of the English national team is comprised of people from working-class backgrounds, with upper-middle class (now about 40% of England) largely untapped.
In Taiwan about 50% of the CPBL is aboriginal (2% of the population), so we have up to 98% of the population not doing much. I acknowledge that aboriginals are an integral part of Taiwan’s rich baseball story, and I’m grateful for their contributions, but the Hans need to get off their butts.
