Is there a danger you’ll end up speaking like a girl? Both in pronunciation and phrase selection?
In China they think the Taiwanese accent sounds girly whether spoken by men or women. So don’t worry about it!
As long as you don’t speak like a 嗲嗲女.
How about repeating words… like 兔兔?
Not a lot to worry about and also depends on the girl.
Does she speak intelligently or like squeaky hello kitty.
Either way, it will be extremely helpful in the learning process.
A lot of teachers are female so could be getting some of it anyway through them.
Men and women speaks pretty much the same way in Taiwan. There is no gender specific grammar like say Japanese or Thai. Even the word choice differences is pretty minor, especially repeating words are easy to spot, so easy to correct yourself if you want to.
If u wanna sound cooler don’t learn in the north and dont learn from young people. The language is increasingly lamer and poncified the more north and young you go.
The best male style accent in Taiwan is like a twangy loud Taiwanese accent infused southerner.
Preferably with mob ties and hawked out with red betel juice spittle.
Just don’t add ‘la’ in a rising tone at the end of every other sentence and I think you’re good to go.
Nothing wrong with adding la or ah or oh or hoh at the end of every sentence. The more u add the more points you get!
I’d say there’s a greater risk that your Chinese won’t progress at all, or that progress will be very slow with a Taiwanese partner. I say this based on personal experience and based on other Foreigner + Taiwanese couples I’ve known. ![]()
Only if you don’t listen to anyone else!
There is Singlish, and then there is Jporn-English. ![]()
Just make sure the girl doesn’t speak English. Otherwise you’ll end up speaking the wrong language…
It’s been said so, yes. I am guilty of speaking feminine. Actually, continuously so. I don’t take it as an insult, but it has been meant as one more often than not. In the most typical of local ways we all [should] know well and dear. I mean clear. Ya’ know…
If you are a mature male, you won’t care either way. If you get called a pussy but get great pussy and marry said pussy, those pussies that called you a pussy will respect your buckling down of said “being [a] pussy”.
All that to say: yes I am called feminine in my mandarin. So ar emany i know. And before they criticized me on that, they laughed at my bastardized taiwanese skills crossed with mandarin (thanks grandma!!!). And before that they laughed at me going to school for mandarin. And before that they laughed at me for not having a second language. And before that…whatever. Fuck those pussies, at least we try.
Point is, I might sound like a girl, but I have a great girl. My daughter is also great. My grandmas (plural) are also pretty forward thinking. Thebkid, the wife and the grandma are smart enough to think deep. Or at least are ok to be forced not to oppress thought. So we don’t need to care what retarded people judge us on, just be yourself and try to be better. They will notice later on, and respect you if your motives are decent enough.
Be aware, sometimes things take time. A real.time investment pays off dividends. Short terms, play it as you will.
Sorry to be so direct, but it aint wrong ![]()
Just my 2 cents.
Sometimes you meet a girl whose English, or accent, is really good and maybe specific to a particular country. Or who uses certain words that are mostly only used by men, not women, from English speaking countries. Or who knows more about sports and teams from a particular country than one would expect.
Have to ask you self hmmm… why?
I think we know why ![]()
Maybe consider avoiding those women.
Absolutely. Take me for example: I basically learned Mandarin from and with a bunch of lesbian female teenagers. So… lots of hao-aaaah, zo-baaaah, quai-laaah, etc.
You bet that anyone hearing for the first time me trying to speak the language will have a… hard time guessing I’m a guy. Or will basically roll on the floor, laughing.
Funny enough, this kind of cute, san-ba Mandarin interaction seems to resonate quite positively with most of my Taiwanese suppliers.
Absolutely!
Yes. Absolutely.
