Has anybody been able to defer your American student loans (federal) due to studying at one of the universities here?
How about just doing a Mandarin program?
I’m trying to do this, but Sallie Mae says no school in Taiwan is eligible.

Use economic hardship, easy paperwork and can be done for 3 years. I’d only suggest that with subsidized stafford loans as the govt pays the interest then.
Depending on what kind of loans you have with S.M. I’d check out the loan consolidation program that is run by the government.
loanconsolidation.ed.gov/AppEnt … pindex.jsp
I did it and consolidated my loans and am paying a monthly fee based on my income rather than based on something that a bank wants me to. I’m paying $180 a month on almost $45000 (yikes). They might be more flexible with your situation. They key though is to get your loan away from the bank and into this program. You’ll still be paying interest, but at least it’s going back into the cookie jar rather than in some wall street bankers’ pocket.
Hope this helps.
