Hi,
Two local dentists here in Hsinchu have told me that getting dental crowns are not covered by insurance. Can anyone tell me if that is accurate?
Thank you,
KP
I remember seeing a chart… Priced with and without insurance.
If I can dig it up, Ill post it.
Correct. Crowns not covered by health insuranc
Crowns and any cosmetic dental work is not covered by NHI. I have VERY expensive personal medical insurance, and even that doesn’t cover it.
I’ve had a couple crowns. I thought the root canal was covered, but not the crown itself. Similarly, for an implant, pulling the old tooth/root was covered, but the implant wasn’t.
Thank you everyone, for the helpful information

I actually had a crown ordered today, middle-price range (not a cheaper base metal inside b/c of my sensitivities, and porcelain outer), it was TWD8,500 for that, and TWD450 total for the three other visits to prepare the tooth. To be precise I had porcelain sides and a metal chewing surface, which dentists don’t bother offering as Taiwanese thinking is if I am paying for porcelain I want all porcelain, even though a metal surface is stronger. (That’s my dentist’s quote, not my own view.) A metal outer is about $1,000 less than the porcelain. My father just spent about TWD50,000 for the same thing in NZ, so I am quite happy.
Hope that disclosure helps you.
All porcelain are in the range of $20,000. I just had two redone in the early summer. Still much cheaper than what I paid when they were first knocked out in Canada about 20 years ago.
I had to have a crown recently too. The dentist worked with an orthodontist whose children I used to teach and so I got everything free except the crown. I paid about 7,000nt for a mid-range one that they recommended for me. I could have gone with the gold, for only a few thousand more. I’m thinking that’s the average price for a good teeth-cleaning in the USA.
On the other, I DO recommend that you choose a dentist carefully and stick with the one you trust!!! If you haven’t been to the dentist yet, ask your friends or co-workers to recommend one.
Really? How did I manage to get mine for less than half as much, then?
I just got a root canal and they quoted me a price range of NT 8,000 - 30,000 (not including the post), obviously depending on the material. So does this sound about right based on others’ experience?
