Depositing a US check in Taiwan

I receive a paycheck from an old job twice a year.
There is no way I can direct deposit it into a bank account.
Can I cash a check from the USA in Taiwan if I have it mailed to me? Or is there any other option?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely check with your bank on this before having it mailed to you, but I believe that you should be able to deposit it into your account in Taiwan and it will clear and be converted into Taiwan dollars after a number of weeks (maybe 2-3 weeks to clear). You will probably have to pay a hearty fee for this service though.

Why not open an account in the US and have your previous employer deposit it into that account?

City Bank usually let’s you cash foreign checks, but they have changed their policies and charge now ca 2000NT$. You’ll have to wait a couple of weeks for your money to arrive also.
Another option is to open an American Dollar account at Wanna bank. Best is if your boss can wire the money.

International cheques will take about 4 weeks to clear and there is an 800NT? processing fee, at least from my own experience.

Perfect, thanks a lot guys.

Last i checked with one local taiwan bank it was 300nt service charge (no matter the amount of the check). And it takes a couple of week, more like a month to get that money.

2000NT fee? I got an Australian cheque from NAB, can I open an AUS Dollar account somewhere?

I believe the issue is not the currency of the account, but the fact that the money has to be wired from one country to another.

Have you thought about Endorsing the Check for Deposit Only, and sending to your, I assume US bank. Then you can add and subtract funds via Paypal. Waiting time… 7 days for air mail and how ever long it takes for your bank to clear your check. Fee $0.00
The OP had a job in his home country recently so I will make the assumption that he may still have a bank account.

Just a tip:
Americans, especially NJ residents, keep your bank accounts active. The statement is a form of ID that you may need to renew your licenses and other things. I do that by just transferring a dollar or two between my accounts in the bank electronically or sending money to and from PayPal. If you don’t most banks will charge you an inactive fee and there goes your account. Anyway, this account helps me do as the OP wants and now is helping me renew my NJ Drivers License. With out it I would be SOL.

completely agree.

I would not even consider closing my US bank account and mailing checks is the way to go.
