How should one properly dispose of or recycle an old laptop computer that no longer works?

You wouldn’t believe what some people will do with broken laptops…
I have an old laptop with broken screen and noisy fan that needs replacement. The laptop would be quite decent albeit a bit heavy if it worked. Where can I sell it? Repair shops? I assume they wouldn’t pay much for it if anything.
