I assume that I’d need six months or more remaining time on my passport to get a visa for a short visit to China. Can anyone confirm this, though? I couldn’t find any information about this on the official sites.
Thanks for any info.

According to this Chinese consulate site, your assumptions are correct.
“Passport – You should submit your original passport that is valid for at least another 6 months with at least one blank visa page and a photocopy of the passport’s information/photo page.”
