I fell in love with Taiwan and even after all these years away from earthquakes, alcohol subsitutes for friends and family, cockroaches, mosquitoes etc, I’m not sure anywhere else is home in the same way.

I came back here after a few years. Now, I’ve been here quite a while. I know I will leave the island in the nearer future, but the thought of it makes me sad. It’s too convenient here for the Westerner. Too easy. This is quite normal to get used to such a life.
What are you in your country? Are you cherished because you know how to use chopsticks? Or is anyone thrilled that you just said “ni hao”? 
You don’t need any special qualifications to be admired, it is enough to be white. Who wouldn’t like that? :discodance:
My theory is that Taiwan spoils foreigners, in a way that most of them stop developing. I admire people who are able to leave the island and pursue their career goals in the West. Of course each story is different. This is just a generalization. I didn’t mean to offend anyone who actually works here

You are a special person with chopsticks, obviously! I’m governmental in usual work. I have to admit after a great few years I am starting to miss Taiwan though.

I don’t ever want to settle anywhere. I would be happy with a house in Kaosiung so I can come visit from time to time, but I am too mobile to have lasting roots.
This is true. And yet, being white alone does not make it…it may make things easier, you may even snag a spouse, but ultimately, the life you make for yourself, the choices you make, the success you achieve, depends upon your hard work, character and principles. The same things that will help you do well in your country.
Aaahh just some early morning rant…IMO, if you have a screwed up life, you will have it everywhere, and if you can make yourself a haven here, you can make it anywhere - it’s just that you chose to do it here.

I am fortunate enough to have a tolerant husband who doesn’t mind my going back to Taiwan for a month each year. I do get kind of itchy at the seven or eight month mark, waiting to go back, though.
