Do you have to pay Taxes even if you don't work?

Hey everyone, I’m new to Taiwan and I just got my JFRV / ARC. I was wondering if I still need to pay Taxes even if I don’t work? I know this sounds ridiculous but I heard you still have to pay some type of tax. I’m not sure if I misheard or it just false imformation I got. Any information would be appreciated.

Also, is there a minimal amount you have to make to start paying taxes or do you just have to pay taxes for anything you make, even if its a very small amount of income.

Probably not but you need to file taxes every year. It could be possible that they ask you a minimum amount of taxes for ‘using public infrastructure’ … call it a contribution to the country you live in. It has happend to foreigners.

There are a range of deductions available. If you do not have any income you are not required to pay income taxes as taxes are levied on taxable income. You cannot under most circumstances avoid paying NHI premiums which some would consider a form of tax. Neither can you avoid paying VAT if you are a resident.

You need to file, but they probably won’t accept 0 NT$ income as you have to live off something, an income, savings, overseas income, rent, shares …
