Drone Industry Taiwan

Chiayi wants to be the Asia Drone industry hub and looks like Taiwan is putting some national effort into developing the drone industry in Taobao Chiayi County, where Southern Branch of National Palace Museum is located.

CSIST will add people and build facilities as well as NTU.

There is a drone airfield somewhere but don’t know where.

Great that they’re creating an alliance with academia. I feel good about Taiwan’s economic future.

Potential Asia Hubs

  1. Drones
  2. F-16 Repair and Maintenance

Starting Already

  1. AI Research (Google, Amazon, MS, IBM, Yahoo!)
  2. Cloud Computing and Operations (MS data center as big as the one in Seattle HQ)

Well Established

  1. Semiconductor Fabrication (ASML and Mitsubishi Chemical invest as a result)
  2. Semiconductor Design (Mediatek owns 23% market share for phone SoCs, behind Qualcomm; Qualcomm has regional R&D center, Micron has huge presence)
  3. Laptops (part of reason for Google’s large presence, to be close to Acer/ASUS, suppliers for Chromebooks).

The Civil Aviation Bureau 交通部民用航空局 has a map that shows the prohibited areas to fly drones in Taiwan ( click on Airspace query / 空域查詢)

You are allowed to fly drones on the green areas
