Drywall for soundproofing

(This post originally asked about acryl panel, but it appears that drywalls are more effective)

Car and motorcycle noise pass through my windows. I tried to put 3M tapes around the corners of the window but it doesn’t seem to work.

After long research, I decided to try drywall.

I am talking about something like this Soundproof Drywall - Best Way to Soundproof a Wall? - YouTube

What should I search in Chinese? Where can I find that in Greater Taipei? Searching PC Home wasn’t successful but maybe I am searching for wrong search terms.

Also, I am fine with completely blocking my window. Any solution that blocks this noise is fine even if it makes it impossible to see the outside. What will be the best solution?

The local term is 壓克力. If you search it in Google Maps you’ll find lots of local places that do it (e.g. on Taiyuan Road north of the train station in Taipei), which can sell you sheets in any size and thickness you like.

Thank you! I will try this as well. By the way I changed the question to what is known as soundproof drywall. After more research, this seems to be a better soundproof than acryl. Do you know how to find it?

Do a search of your local area on google maps for 石膏板

https://www.google.com/search?q=石膏板

Can I jump in here and ask if anyone knows about expanded cork? It’s rot and pest-resistant, sound and thermal insulating, and doesn’t burn unless held up to a fuel source. Also, it’s just wood and it’s held together with its own natural resin, so it’s totally nontoxic.

Seems like it can be screwed into the walls or even put in place with 3M command strips and then removed upon moving.

My initial research got me thinking this was the best way to sound proof a room as it blocks exterior noise in addition to absorbing the sounds within the room (All those air pockets)

I tried contacting a supplier in Portugal but they didn’t get back to me. The suppliers in the US/UK only want to use air freight, which immediately quadruples the cost before even factoring in import taxes.

Thought I’d throw this out here, as I got the impression that even drywall wasn’t much of a thing here.

Or 隔音石膏板, here’s one:

Mass loaded vinyl? Maybe some auto thinsulate (sm600l)?

Amazing! Thank you.

What is Chinese word for mass loaded vinyl?

Sheetrock is another name for drywall or gypsum.

For best results use several layers of 1/2" or 3/4" drywall on either side of a 1/2" steel plate. The metal will do much more to prevent the energy of the waves of sound energy from passing through. The gypsum will add more sound absorption where the steel will do more to stop it.

I’m not sure steel will do anything to dampen sound as sound travels really fast in steel. But drywall would work well. MDF also works real well too.

jeez, are you trying to create armour?

Yea 1/2" steel plate is unnecessary… and it doesn’t stop sound nearly as well as you think. Steel conducts sound in fact. Maybe if you want to stop bullets or something…

2 layers of standard dry wall with an inner layer of some kind of gooey substance (like those stuff used for soundproofing) works well enough.

Heavy steel reflects sound. He said he wants to keep sound out correct? Why does heavy steel reflect the sound? Because the noise of a scooter or bus doesn’t have enough energy to travel through the steel the same way bullets do not easily penetrate steel.

Create a sandwich of drywall with steel in the middle and enjoy quiet happiness.

Metals are very good at reflecting sound but tbh I’d just look for some acoustic insulating slabs to place behind a sheets of drywall/plasterboard. Can you get rockwool products in Taiwan? They have bunch of products specifically for this.

Why not use wood. Mildly better for sound than steel. Why not just fill with insulation betwern studs then sheet.

Though probably sound curtains like they use in theaters, recording rooms etc would be far easier and cheaper. Though more of a dust magnet.

No idea.

That sounds like a relatively expensive, inconvenient, maybe not that effective way to isolate sound. While I suspect sandwiched 1/2" steel will block sound pretty well due to being so thick and heavy, steel generally conducts sound better than wood, so I’m not sure that sandwiching wood with sheetrock won’t work better, be cheaper, and be easier to build and handle.

But if I were building a window insert, if I could find it, I’d probably start out with sm600l. If you can’t, I’d probably try fiberglass insulation. Cut with scissors, stuff in window opening, done. It that doesn’t work well enough, I’d add MLV, or something else heavy that you can hang against the wall - a heavy blanket would probably work really, really well.

i.e. use stuff made for blocking sound that’s really, really easy to handle rather than getting crazy with things like cutting a 1/2" thick steel plate to size, and if you can’t find the purpose made sound blocking material, find an analog to it.

If you don’t like metal then use layers of glass. How big is the opening? Put an inch of glass plates in the hole.

I think I found that mass loaded vinyl is translated into 量加載乙烯基 on Alibaba. But Alibaba is a mainland Chinese company. If I search for 量加載乙烯基 at any Taiwanese shopping malls, I cannot find any. Does Taiwan use different translation for mass loaded vinyl?

Have you tried fiberglass insulation and a heavy blanket just to see how well it works?

Edit: and how big an opening are you talking!
