Dual-citizenship, work and live in Taiwan with US salary

Hi,

I have Taiwan and US citizenship. Currently live in the US and working for a US company, company plan to send me back to Taiwan to run a representative office for few years. My salary will be deposit to a US bank account and pay income tax in the US.

I will spend more than 183 days in Taiwan every year. Can I just withdraw US salary from ATM in Taiwan to avoid Taiwan income tax? Is there a better way to do this?

My advice: get the official tax documentation from the American and Taiwanese governments and understand how to apply tax law to your situation. When it comes to taxes, the devil is in the details of your specific situation. You can listen to other people but always double (and triple) check because it is your ass on the line.

Hi Eli,

Will you be arriving as an American or as a Taiwanese?

Hi Citizen K,

I plan to come in as Taiwanese. What I heard is I have to use my Taiwanese passport in order to register as local resident. Any suggestion?

Isn’t tax paid in Taiwan deductible from the tax you owe in the US? I thought I’d heard it was.

Yeah, really watch it. My ex-brother-in-law (acutally, the western relationship is cousin of my ex) just returned and, though he was assured (by TECO in NY and over the phone to Taiwanese authorities in Taiwan) that he would not have to do service becuase he’s the only son and both his parents are disabled, now that he’s back in Taiwan, after 10 years in the States, he’s still going to have to do it.

Thanks guys. I went back to Taiwan in 1999 and spent 2 years in military, had good time! Still need help with Taiwan income tax, I have to pay income tax in the US and hope to avoid double tax in Taiwan. Any suggestion are welcome, anyone know good accountant deal with international tax?

If you are coming in on a Taiwanese passport, I don’t see a problem. I assume you’ll need to file an income tax return here since you will be residing here, but many locals seem not to have any declarable income, so you should be fine. Just don’t think about running for the legislature like Dianne what’s-her-name!
