Earthquake 2009

Just felt one here

Well, I didn’t feel the first 5 quakes today but just felt one then. No. 6 I guess.

Thanks for that link, urodacus.

what the heck is going on? my inbox is being hit every half an hour by jlicks earthquake alerts! some major shift in the plates coming up?

I haven’t felt any of them, but then again I feel far fewer quakes here in Xindian than I used to in Taipei for some reason, possibly being technically outside the basin or something. But still, better a bunch of smaller quakes than one big one, I guess.

Yes looks like Hualien has been busy today, the Mandarin site is showing:

should I be concerned that there have been 10 earthquakes in the last 5 hours? :astonished:

No. Lots of little quakes reduce the pressure so you don’t get a big one. I think.

They’re still coming:

Nother one round 3am ish. STrange swarm of quakes all in the same area. I hope it has reduced a LOT of pressure and no quakes past 5 on richter will happen in the area now. Better ten 4s then one 5.

cwb.gov.tw/V6e/

Didn’t feel any.

Actually, there were more than 40…

Most weird. I bet the geoboffins are scratching heads right now.

Tommy said, ‘better ten 4s than one 5’, but we had several 5s in there too. Better ten 5s than one 8, that’s what I say.

but the most earth shattering thing was getting the contents of my house moved today. Man, that’s a relief to get that over. Some measure their life out in teaspoons*, but mine is writ larger: 150 crates of shit.

Very very odd indeed, earthquake clusters of 4s mostly with one 5 and some approaching 5. Very odd. I should think most clusters are much smaller. Whats being said on local news about this?

Lets hope it just keeps releasing pent up energy via quakes of no more then 4 intensities.

And is not a precursor to a bigger event.

small one there

The one about 30 minutes ago did not seem so small, although having only been in Taipei since Saturday I don’t have anything against which to calibrate it. Hmmm. My family and I are here for some intensive Chinese tuition, not to become minor news items back home when our building collapses!

Hm, how come the CWB doesn’t note an earthquake today?

probably because it was a very small one centered in Taipei itself. If it’s smaller than about 4, sometimes less if it’s been quiet, then it doesn’t rate a mention, though the shock felt in Taipei may well be much larger than the shock felt in Taipei from a 4.5 in Yilan.

That aside, if there was one today, and I think I did actually feel a wobble, I’d have put it at about an 0.5 or so: nothing to write home about.

I’ve read that people can’t feel them if they’re under 2 or 3 or something silly like that, but I’m sure I’ve felt 1.0’s many times, maybe even smaller ones. Perhaps sensitivity varies by person. :idunno:

I was exquisitely sensitive when i first got here, perhaps because it was right after riding a motorcycle at speed for many years. Now, not so sensitive, but i still feel many tremors a day. Even from a bus going past.

I am sure that different people are differently tuned in to such tremors. And when I’m drunk, it all kind of balances out anyway.
