Easy, fun games for 1-on-1s with kids?

I’m now teaching a 6, 8, 10 and 14 year old privately in the evenings. I’m in need of a couple of simple games that encourage light conversation whilst being played - I’m thinking Uno, card games, 0s & Xs, chess, that wooden-block-tower-game (name?).

What are your suggestions?

Cheers for the help, mateys…

teach them card games they don’t know (match the level). i grabbed a book back home called “card games for smart kids” (margie golick), and have taught a few of them, as well as hearts and euchre.

or have them teach you games that they know, using english. if i play games, i try to make sure there is going to be more speaking than simply saying a number … just learning how to communicate while playing a game can be tough (it’s your turn, hurry up, you skipped my turn etc.)

once they are familiar with things, i always subtract points or give extra cards for using chinese

lotsa games and stuff on the net, but takes some time to look thru.

Play slap the hands with days of the week or months when reciting in order. They slap your hands every word you say but you can made. It may hurt but it will be fun for your student.

This wouldn’t be appropriate if you are teaching the young’uns and older kids together but a simple game of eye-spy works well for beginners. It’s great for teaching kids the names of colours and common household objects and there’s no supplies no prep time needed.
