Perhaps that’s the Problem with Taiwan is that it is looking for answers in Chinese thought.
If Taiwanese culture is so unique, perhaps they should be looking for answers from of the works of great Taiwanese philosophers, writers and movie directors…
Oh yeah there aren’t many…could be the source of the problem right there.

I swear to God, I’ve been told personally by pan-blues that there are no intelligent Taiwanese because they were all killed by the KMT. Could that be the reason?
Japanese beat the KMT to it.
Realistically speaking, it is because neither Imperial China nor Japan cultivated Taiwan island to be a scholarly mecca. Just looking at LTH and you see the epitome of what Japanese colonial education produced.
Even looking at Taiwan now the most driven people seek their professional education overseas.
You re worrying too much. Once re unification is achieved, Communism, an essentially non Chinese thinking will come and save Taiwan from its ideological poverty. There will no longer be controversy over Chinese/Taiwanese origins.
Emulating the mainland, Taiwan will however go on and develop its socialism with Taiwanese characteristics. Beijing I think will at least allow its erstwhile wayward sons that much autonomy
.
Realistically speaking, you’ll never convince anybody you’re not a racist with comments like that. Or convince anybody that Chinese are not condescending toward Taiwanese.
So, why are US and EU universities filled with so many mainland Chinese students these days?
Nobody gives a shit. That is the problem. Taiwanese politics is a comedy.
I guess growing up in a racially charged environment makes everyone a racist then. Everyone has a bias, the hard part is when you obtain a postion of authority how to identify one’s own bias to ensure there is harmony in the environment you have control over. To make sure everyone is fairly treated today in the here and now, regardless of background. That opportunities are presented purely on merit.
But observing the DPP leadership and CSB in particular, I don’t believe they subscribe to this kind of ideal.
Seems they are more intested in gathering support of the extremist in their camp. Goes back to one of the fundimental flaws of the republic. If I can mobilize 100% of an extremist group the make up no more than 10% of the population, do they have a right to hi-jack the majority of moderates who are not so easy to mobilize?

Uhm because East Asians value education and want to displace the Jews at Universities to take over the world. It’s in the Chinese Conspiracy handbook. Didn’t you get a copy yet. ![]()
I think you are missing the point. Many ROC citizens professional seek additional overseas jobs experience, besides schools.
Ac, observing the KMT through out the history, you even get a worse picture on racism. Or, let us say, is there any nationalist party which is non-racist?
The editorial is straight into the point. It doesn’t matter who is riding the ship, if the ship is sinking. You may drive it to shallower waters, but it will still sink. With a political system where slander occurs everyday, no one trusts anybody, and no one is trustable. There are so many bad things in the system - starting, of course, by the way it is controlled - that people are eaten by the system without even knowing.
I have some road work on an adjacent lane that, in a normal country, would take 1 month to finish. I got amazed when the billboard says 10 months. Then I started to understand why - there are 10 workers maximum, and they only worked on it for 3-4 weeks. Then they disappeared and came back 1 month later to do some more 1 week work. Then they disappeared again. Yesterday they came back to undo (you heard me well) part of their work, so one can only wonder when this will finish, or what the final job will be. Meanwhile, the bus that I was catching to come home doesn’t pass here any more and I have to walk a bit to go to the next bus stop.
No there isn’t. I believe the concept of Nationalism is inherently racist. The Nazi’s paraded around declaring the superiority of their nation. Look what happened next?
Plus we’ve seen AC rant on about the Japanese and the condescending views he has towards inter-racial marriage in those posts. So to AC; no, actually there were many rich Taiwanese, even the elite and the very well educated under the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. As if you haven’t heard of what happened during and following the 228 Massacres, most of Taiwan’s leaders, elite, and so forth were executed by the KMT.
Well said, and I used to think the construction jobs in the US were bad, I didn’t know it could be worse. On government construction projects its not uncommon to watch the workers consume coffee and donuts until its 11pm, then stop construction at 4 topped off with an hour break.
This article is written well but has one issue, politicians SHOULD have the ability to be able to carry out their work without worrying about lawsuits and other things all day. There should be some form of legislative immunity. Perhaps we can create a sort of 3 Strikes law once they finish their term? As in if they have too much corruption, make it law that they’ll have to serve really long prison sentences. I’m just throwing out ideas here.
shrimp, legislators in other countries don’t have immunity and normally don’t worry with lawsuits, because they don’t spend their days slandering everyone.

Annette Lu and Chen Shui-bian both have criminal records and did time. How do you differentiate between political and criminal records?

Legislator Yen Ching-piao was actually elected while in jail. Isn’t it the democratic right of the people to elect who they want?

Taiwanese could be aiming for the prize of being the first people to control their government and have social stability. Could that be Confucianism, which we view as a social system with goverment almost an afterthough, at work?
Lu Xun (1881-1936) an Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) read voraciously and were among the first wave of Chinese to study overseas.
Here’s something that may help the process:

It’s funny, because when Sun Yat-sen was in the US, he criticized the US for permitting people with jail time to stand for office. Now look at the ROC.

There were relatively few land owners under the Japanese systems. There was no Taiwanese President. There were no Taiwanese Generals.
Under the ROC “occupation” there were 2 BSR President. There are more land owners than you can shake a stick at. And there are also a few BSR generals.
I mean even in terms of international policy Imperial Japan prevented more asian from immigrating into the USA with the “sneaky” Pearl Harbor incident. Not many Formosan/USA dual passport holders either.
I really don’t understand the benchmarks you are measuring Japan’s occupation.
Unless you’re one of those confused TI supporters that is using modern Japan’s achievements, wishing that Taiwan could have attained the same advancements under colonial rule.

But the self-deluded provincial racists will always remain?
How convenient.
CSB jail time had less to do with democracy or freedom of speech. He deliberately slandered someone in the magazine he was running at the time. Lost the court case and went to jail for a few months because he refuse to print a retraction as specified in the court ruling.
The epitome of Confucian teaching CSB turned out to be.
