El Gallo - Mexican restaurant in Tianmu (Closed)

Go up Chungshan N. Rd. past TAS. Cross the big crossroads just after TAS and keep going up the hill for about 100 yards. El Gallo is on your right, just after California Fitness.

What Sandman said. Also, it’s the place that looks like a nice restaurant. (I mention that because I don’t think they have much in the way of signage yet.)

Beauty, thanks!

They have a sign now. You have to be in front to see it though.

Today’s Taipei Times has a favorable review:
The newly opened El Gallo in Tianmu bills itself as the best Mexican restaurant in Taiwan on the back of its menus. While that claim may lend itself to hearty debate — Eddy’s Cantina in Tamsui and La Casita each have their own passionate devotees — El Gallo might very well be the best-looking Mexican restaurant in the country. The main dining room is filled with shimmering tiles, warm hardwoods and lit with glowing, stained-glass ceiling lamps. The back room, which is available for dinner parties, is truly a revelation: mint-green walls are offset by framed folk-art tapestries with a rainbow of appliques, white furniture and a giant planter in the middle of the room filled with flowers, lush green leaves and branches that curve up to the high ceiling.

El Gallo’s menu, which offers a comprehensive range of authentic dishes, does its surroundings justice…
the pictures of the carnitas is definitely drool-worthy… i will be making the trip next week! thanks for the heads up!

I dunno… I went and it just seemed failry bland…I am a relative novice when it comes to Mexican food, but I thought it was meant to be spicy… I went with my wife and we ordered a soup, a burrito and taco and it just seemed like standard food, the kind of food you would fill up on after a few beers…but certainly nothing to savour…

Perhaps I’ve been living here too long… I find myself like the local cuisine more and more…strong flavours and all that… I’d be interested to hear some other reviews…

Ps… I like the Chinese restaurant at Shezi Flower Market… v. good.

Hello Taiwan for life, thank you for your kind comments. Our burritos are one of our best sellers, it might be that we do actually make Mexican burritos, not texmex or taiwanese burritos. Still, we will always welcome comments on our dishes. For even stronger more Mexican flavors, may I suggest trying our “MOLE”, an ancient Mexican chocolate sauce, prepared with dried chile peppers (commonly ancho, pasilla, mulato and chipotle), ground nuts and/or seeds (almonds, indigenous peanuts, and/or sesame seeds), spices, Mexican chocolate (cacao ground with sugar and cinnamon and occasionally nuts), salt, and a variety of other ingredients including charred avocado leaves, onions, and garlic. Dried seasonings such as ground oregano are also used. In order to provide a rich thickness to the sauce, bread crumbs or crackers are added to the mix. It is mildly spicy and a whole new flavor for those who have never experienced before. A whole new experience. Also you could try our “CARNITAS” ( Pork meat slowly cooked in its own juices and a few more ingredients) This is one of our most famous dishes, flavor in every bite, juicy, tasty and with a bit of lemon juice, plus salsa you can make your very own tacos and have a taste of what ancient Mexican kings eat in pre-european times. Also, please ask us for our “FUEGO ROJO” salsa, an invention of our very own native Mexican chef: Isa Bayardo.

Best regards;

MexicoSabroso

Here are some pictures of what MOLE is:

Thanks for the hints on what to order next time; the dishes you describe would probably suit my palate more. Thanks again.

I had delicious enchiladas for lunch today. They were covered with a meat sauce. They are my new favorite dish there. I didn’t see tamales on the menu, but there are a lot more items on it now. They let me try a new dessert that will be on the menu soon–cinnamon-covered strips of fried dough with cream and chocolate. Very good. I drank a mojitos. I never had one of those before.

i bought take out from El Gallo last week and i was pleasantly surprised  i ordered the beef quesadilla and flan to go and i REALLY like the beef quesadilla… maybe it’s because i haven’t had good Mexican food in a while so i was really happy when i took the first bite  the beef in the quesadilla was not overly seasoned like a lot of the other quesadillas i’ve had in the past… the salsa was really fresh with just the right amount of spiciness
the cheese in the quesadilla was also really good… i’ve had some weird cheeses on pizza before in taiwan, so i’m really glad they used REAL cheese  there was a little side of salad served with the quesadilla and the dressing on the salad was really good
after eating a really good quesadilla, i was really looking forward to eating the flan… but the texture was a bit different from the flan i’ve had in the past… it wasn’t as custardy as i expected, but i still finished it…
i give the restaurant 2 thumbs up
i will definitely go back and try their other entrees
