Stephen Krashen will speak at Ming Chuan University in March. Seems like it will be a good one to attend. The topic will be a discussion of extensive reading using the Internet. Could “surfing the net” really be a beneficial language learning method?

I lectured at this conference 2 years ago. Biggest group of people I’ve spoken before since my theatre days. Lots of interesting lectures and workshops. If you are serious about your craft, you can derive a great deal of benefit from this conference.

And yes, reading the internet is an excellent way to develop all 6 skills. Particulary if the student uses a site like wikipedia. Then they can search for topics specific to their lives, thereby learning vocab focused on their experience.

krashen had an interesting argument last year with one of the other speakers. they didn’t really want to let it go either.

there was some great stuff, and i’m trying to fit it into my schedule again.

Excellent post joe. I wish this had been done while I was there. If anyone goes to these, can you report back?

Here are the tentative program pages (without frames) for the conferences in Tainan.

From a quick glance through there’s nothing that jumps out and grabs me there. Seems fairly theoretical: not too much about classroom SLA research or about practical activities/techniques.

What happened to the ETA conference in November? I clicked on this link:

eta.org.tw/eta/16th_english/INDEX.HTM

which according to the first posting of this thread, is the link to information about the 16th International Symposium and Book Fair on English Teaching. Nothing there. The eta.org.tw link doesn’t go anywhere either.

Worth keeping an eye on it to see whether it will be back up after a while.

By the way, I’ve created a new sticky thread for ELT-related conferences in 2008, using a post you made. The new thread’s here:

It looks like the ETA-ROC website is up again. Take a look:
