Seems to me that in this age of bindmoggling technology, it should be possible to send a short email to a text message-compatible cell phone. Something like @chunghwa.com.tw.
Is this possible?

It’s possible both ways but of course depends if the operator offers that feature. My Nokia phone has a “Create SMS e-mail” function, all you need to know is the email server number. You can ask this from your operator.
