Emissions Testing for Scooters

How often does a scooter need to have this test? I recently heard about it for the first time. I have owned my scooter for 2 years and in that time renewed the license, insurance and paid traffic fines, but have never been asked or heard about emissions testing.

I would like to sell my bike now and need to find out if there are some outstanding fines that I need to pay. I bought the bike from Motorcycle shop so I presume that it had the emissions test before I bought it.

Anyone out there have any ideas or knowledge in this area. I would appreciate some help.

Thanks

Good question. I had to get my scooter emissions tested some months ago. The way I knew about it was that the Environmental Protection Agency sent me a letter some weeks before the emissions test sticker was due to expire.

So I wouldn’t worry too much as long as the Department of Motor Vehicles have your correct postal address.

I think maybe vehicles have to be a certain age before they come up for emissions testing. I don’t know how often the test is due – I would have guessed a year but I’ve had my 11-year-old motorbike for over a year and haven’t heard anything yet.

I’ll try to find out and post back. Or maybe somebody else can help.

Taipeiguy, the emissions test is due every year, but that may only be for bikes over a certain age. Did you buy yours new?

They have a thing in Tainan where they set up testing points at the side of the road and pull bikes over to test them. They give you a yellow sticker to say you have been tested and Ok’ed. I went with the added option of not speaking any chinese to ensure I had no problems with the testers.

(BTW I am just guessing this is an emmisions test)

BB, did they stick a pipe in the exhaust? If so, it was emissions testing.

I think so. They were doing something near my rear-end so I tried not to look just in case it was painful. It was about this time last year and I have seen a couple of testing sites appear again recently.

Hi,

I purchased a used scooter recently. The previous owner had a notice from the authorities saying the scooter was due for emissions testing before the end of June. I now have that notice.

Can anyone tell me:

  1. Where, in general, scooters are inspected for emissions? What type of place does it … Dept of Motor Vehicles, scooter shops, gas stations, etc?

  2. Any specific recommended places to go for the inspection (north or central part of town) that are easy or convenient?

  3. What documentation do I need to bring to the inspection. Fee?

Thanks a bunch,

As far as I know, the emissions test has to be done every two years. Look at the top right corner of your licence plate, there should be a round blue(?) sticker with a year on it; this tells you when you need to do another test (ie, if the year has passed, then you need to do the test again). I got a notice in the mail informing me that I had to do the test. The notice tells you which motorcycle shops you can go to to get it done. It’s free, and takes about five minutes, no hassles. My smokey RZR got through, no problems.

As to where?
The shop where I bought my scooter does the testing. I have also seen it being done at 2 other shops I walk by. Should be pretty easy to find a shop that does the testing.

Thanks for the info.

Went to a large scooter shop in my area (Yamaha Service Plaza). They did it in 5 minutes or less. The guy put my scooter on its stand, took my documentation, looked up something on his computer, stuck a hose on the tailpipe for a minute or less, scraped off my old emission sticker, replaced it with a new one, and then said “Ok, that’s it”.

The inspection was free. As to documentation, they wanted the inspection notice and my registration. He did not need to see my insurance card or drivers license.
