End a mobile contract before the end of the term?

Hello all

6 months ago I bought I new phone with a 24 month contract, as a good geek, 6 months with the same phone is a little bit too much and I’d love to take a new one as soon as possible (and change carrier as I really don’t like 大哥大’s network). When I used to live in Europe and Hong Kong, it wasn’t really a problem as their always are some clauses (usually written in really really tiny font somewhere) that allow you to break the contract without fees (like death, serious sickness/accident, moved in a place non covered by 3G or moved/ing abroad. The last one is very interesting as moving abroad is something I can do/proof pretty easily).

I’ve lately searched in my contract, but I don’t find any interesting clauses of this kinds therefore I wonder if you guys have ever tried to do that before, did it work?

Thanks in advance!

Since your contract was used to subsidize the cost for your phone, you’ll most likely end up paying some type of cancellation fee.

For myself, I agreed to a 2 year contract with TWM to get lower monthly rates (already had my phone). The lady told me that if I cancelled after 12 months, the cancellation fee was around 1000-1200NT.

There’s usually a penalty clause in there somewhere of around NT$10,000

1000/1200NT as cancellation fees? That’s cheap ! I can wait a little bit then,

Thanks for the info!

The penalty clause are (usually) waved if you met one of the requirement written above, that’s why I was searching that kind of clauses in this contract. I would be very surprised if there isn’t any.

I am not sure if my cancellation fee would be the same as yours, since I didn’t receive any phone (opted for lower price plans). But who knows…hopefully it works out for you

I recently had to cancel my service with Taiwan Cellular. We moved to an area with no service, and I need the phone for business, so I had to change to Chunghwa Telecom. I got my very basic phone as part of the plan, and had been a customer for many years. My original penalty was going to be $5,000 but they gave me a $1,000 break due to the fact I couldn’t use the service where I was moving. They then spent four months harrassing me for the “outstanding” $1,000. I called them many times to tell them to stop calling my motherinlaw’s house (the old number, we had moved out already) and bothering her. Finally, I had to head into Taipei city and talk to some manager to get them to drop this issue.

Anyway, you should go into a service center and find out which time is the best for you to cancel cost-wise. They should be able to work it out for you.
