⊃⋃⋂⊂ — English Audio with English subtitles?

⊃⋃⋂⊂ — DUNC?

Just an update, I haven’t been able to find an english-subbed cinema so I went to see it at 欣欣Showtime Cinemas in Linsen Park in Taipei (english audio, mandarin subs).

I understood most of the conversations, but I have read the books.
There are a couple of places where the music was just far too loud for the audience to hear the speech. But it wasn’t too bad in general.

In the scenes were they spoke “foreign language” there was both mandarin an english onscreen.

Movie was nice, but the music was too intense in general, also it is a very functional kind of music, no themes or melodies, on trend with current Zimmer sountracks, so I can’t say I liked the music. Very forgettable soundtrack.
But that’s a discussion for another topic.

I also didn’t have trouble with the dialogues, but sometimes characters or places names were hard to understand. I read the books too, but forgot a lot of characters, and probably pronounced things like " Atreides" or the arabic-sounding names wrong when I read them.

It’s a good flick.

Recommend going to see it in the cinema afore it’s too late.

Well worth the big screen for the sound.

Actually you may have been correct rather than the film, Dune has some hacky pronunciation of Arabic-sourced names. Not even to get into the whole “Harkonnen” subject, which is a Finnish name pronounced very differently.

Anyway, audio was no problem, only some early passages of exposition was a bit muddled.

Following up on this: there’s an interesting long article in slashfilm about how, yes, it’s getting harder to understand dialogue.

Christopher Nolan, Tom Hardy, and Tenet get special attention, but it’s not just them! The outline of the article:

  • It’s a purposeful choice.
  • It’s in the acting.
  • Sound isn’t respected enough on sets.
  • Technology (AKA. The Jurassic Park Problem)
  • Familiarity/passive listening.
  • Mixing for cinemas.
  • Mixing for streaming.
  • Home theater woes.

I watched it on HBOGO, English + English subs.

Damn, you weren’t kidding, that was a long one. All of this makes sense. I never really put any thought into it and just figured they’d just put on some headphones and make some stuff louder and other stuff quieter. With so much complexity, it would make sense that different environments would yield different results.

The whole thing about how they prioritize the visual parts makes a lot of sense. Dune really was nice to watch. Makes me wonder if they also blew off the audio folks.
