Hi,
I was wondering if any of you know of a Chinese culinary-baking school in Taiwan (or any where in the world) that give instruction in English.
Specifically, I want to learn how to make classic Chinese bakery, the whole deal (egg tarts, BBQ pork buns, coconut buns…). Strangely, I’m convinced this is my calling and can’t seem to find a school that may teach this kind of stuff. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!
A friend of mine is coming to Taipei from the US and would like to learn how to cook Chinese food. Does anyone know of anywhere she could do this? The classes would need to be conducted in English.
The Community Services Center in Taipei runs cooking classes covering both eastern and western dishes, typically held from 10-12 Friday morning at the center, cost NT$700, and the students eat what they have cooked.
Jodie’s Kitchen
Classes (in English) run by the Taiwanese wife of an Englishman called Jeremy who has a motorcycle repair and rental store called bikefarm. Teaches how to cook inexpensive, healthy, and easy-to-make dishes; Taiwanese, Chinese and Thai.
Cost: from NT$600 per 1 hour class, or two classes for only NT$1000 (more depending on the dishes). Class size: 1 or 2 students.
Tel: (02) 2720-0053
Address: 2F, 29-1 Zi Yun St, Taipei, Taiwan 台北市信義區110紫雲街29-1號2樓

But when I checked out the Web site, I found some different information about prices of classes.
Cost: Our normal class price is NT$2500 for one student (about US$75 or 65 Euros), or NT$4000 for two students. These classes last three to four hours. Some custom classes, longer classes or classes with more expensive ingredients may cost more. Sorry, but we don’t usually offer discounts.
Class size: 1 or 2 students

Thanks mate. She’s obviously put her prices up recently. By Taiwan standards it seems pretty expensive.

This piece of info will be of particular interest to Patti, I’m sure!
I went to a baking class in Shilin. The instruction was in Chinese, but the instructor was trained in France. I will add the exact address to this post if I can find it.
If the Songshan District works for you, this place is a great DIY cooking/baking supply store that also offers cooking & baking lessons.
Thanks MT, I checked it out today. Here’s a clarification on the directions; you have to go just past the start of the upramp for the Minquan bridge (i.e., below the bridge).
As you’re driving East down Minquan (Minquan) E Rd towards Neihu, after passing the aquarium shops and crossing Fuyuan St. (the last before the bridge), instead of getting on the bridge, take the low road parallel to the bridge on the south side. Go a short block, just past a Bridgestone tire shop; turn right, and go about 50 meters, and the shop is on your left. 義興西點原料行 is the shop name; the address is 富錦街574巷2號 Fujin St., Lane 574, #2. Phone 2760-8115. Open 9a-9p; closed the 2nd and 4th Sun. of each month. The owner does speak a tiny bit of English in case you need to ask for something like baking powder.
Their selection of baking stuff is very good, and most prices quite reasonable. Their 1 lb. of butter is cheaper than Welcome or RT Mart, for example, at 65 NT.
It appears the baking supply store is in the same neighborhood as the Songshan Kendo dojo.
I go to Taiwan quite often on business. I love the food, and so my newest bright idea is to start learning how to make some things for my self, if that’s possible. I’m not sure what I want to learn first, because, I like almost everything I’ve tried. I’ve tried making a few recipes by my self, like for Taiwan fried dumplings and tofu I found online but that was not so good
These posts are quite old, so Is anybody who has got any recent experience with one of these cooking schools? What was your opinion?
I probably wouldn’t have the availability for a regular long, many weeks, cooking course. I’m hoping there’s something lasting a few days that I could book into.
Any information would be gratefully received!
ps I can’t speak Chinese, apart from very basic ni haos and xie xies!

Can you give me web-site in english…tq!!
you could check out 國立高雄餐旅學院 (National Kaohsiung Hospitality College) nkhc.edu.tw/index_redir.jsp?
they have a baking dept nkhc.edu.tw/onweb.jsp?webno=3333333355
however, they do state that all classes will be taught in Mandarin and international students will be expected to take a language proficiency test before courses begin…
you could also check out Kai-Ping Culinary School in Taipei kpvs.tp.edu.tw/start/
they don’t say anything about whether classes are taught in english, but you can probably assume that it is not based on their sad english website… you could always send them questions to confirm…
if you’re looking for something more casual, there’s Cooking Studio cookingstudio.com.tw/
thx…but i think it is mostly taught in chinese and have to be good in reading and writing…I don mind they teach in chinese…but i really cant read or write…haha…anyway…i found this school but dont neo whether is good or not.
The Culinary Department of Taipei Kai-Ping Vocational School…any opinion about this school?
Taipei Kai-Ping Vocational School is actually the same school as Kai-Ping Culinary School in Taipei…
I have heard many good things about Kai Ping since their students compete frequently in food competitions… I do not really know much about their different departments so I think it would be a good idea to contact the school for more details (even if the email is in english)… ;p
hi…thanks so much…i find lots of information about different school but havent decide which school yet. Its quite difficult to find schools that teach in english…
Address: TAIPEI KAI-PING CULINARY SCHOOL

Is this area safe?..is it near town …thx for info.
Has anyone gone through this school and have any feedback about it? The curriculum looks quite intensive. Do they offer something more casual / affordable evening classes?
