So, if you are interested but have more questions, post here or email me. If you want to order from this list right away, I am going to place an order this Friday 22nd. Or you can wait till the beg. of January, they will then arrive mid-January.

I missed this post and the 22nd deadline. But I am very interested in learning more about both carriers. I REALLY want to find a carrier that both my wife and I can use that the little guy will actually want to be carried in.

I bought a Mamaway sling and am about to hang myself with it. I started a lens on on it at Squidoo called Damn Baby Sling - squidoo.com/baby-slings/. I was going to take photos on my attempts to use the sling and see if folks would post tips, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet, so it is currently a general reference.

Arn’t Mayawraps just a brand of sling? I’m thinking about getting a soft carrier that straps the guy in and doesn’t crunch hiim up.

Choudofu,

Firstly, I haven’t ordered yet… closed for Christmas so will order first week of January. So you still have time to consider your baby carrying options.

I bought a sling that was made in Taiwan, with plastic rings, is that the one you have? I had big problems with it and took it back. The material was too slippery and kept slipping through the plastic rings. I now have a maya wrap. It is made of cotton and has very good metal rings. I am having a much better time with that. There are also lots of tricks with a sling, so having someone to show you certainly helps. For example, I had the rings too low on the front, once I knew they had to sit higher up, it was much more secure and comfortable. The maya wrap is a very popular sling, and I know a number of moms who post here and on parent pages who really love it. If the mom is breastfeeding, the sling is great as you can do so discreetly, and the sling can act as a blanket, windshield, strangerspittle protector…

I also have a baby bjorn, which is OK but now very expensive in Taiwan (I saw them at mothercare for 6600!!), and only really useable until baby is one year old. It is great for new parents cos it is very simple to use. But I am finding it really hurts my back and shoulders with this second baby, all the weight is on your two shoulders, esp with the older model. Also, once the baby’s legs are longer, they kind of hang down which is really annoying when walking or sitting say on the bus. I can only carry my baby about an hour in the bjorn before getting sore, but around 3 hours in the sling, if I have it on right.

I am going to buy the ergo after trying someone else’s, and after seeing friends use it right through to their child’s toddlerhood. It has a system like a hiking pack, where the weight is distributed on the parent’s hips more. The child also sits a little more like in a sling, with the weight on the child’s bottom rather than crotch (as is the case with the bjorn). We will get 20% discount, and the shipping is currently around 20USD/sling (less if we get more items in the order), so the total price will be the cost of the ergo in the US or thereabouts. The ergo now also has an infant insert which makes it useable from birth.

Anyway, I am sure people will have more ideas for you, and you can go over to parentpages for info too.

asiababy, I remember your sling and I think it was the Baby Lulu brand. The fabric was too slick, but if it had been maybe six inches wider it would have been okay.

Choudofu, that’s a pretty good lens you’ve written. I don’t remember having too much trouble with my first pouch and maya wrap style slings. But the very first carrier (purchased) was the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder which is similar (rings) but the tail is stitched, so you couldn’t drape it over the baby in rain, cold, etc. What I found was the problem with that one was I’d bought it one size too large.

I’ve made a couple of slings for friends and shown them how to use it. I always thought the DVD would be better but you say it didn’t help?

I saw on the lens that you mentioned the risk of baby falling out of the sling. I’ve also tried front packs like the Bjorn and there is also a risk of sliding out, if mom or dad bend too far forward. As you said, you just have to be aware of how you’re moving, bending forward, etc. I’ve used my slings a lot in the last 5+ years and never once had a baby fall out of it or even come close to falling out.
