Hi all, anyone know where I can get erhu lessons in taipei? A friend suggested just going to a park in the morning and getting the people there to teach me, but i’d kind of like private lessons. suggestions?
thanks!
There’s a school of some sort on Dunhua, just north of Dunhua - Nanjing, behind the bus stop. They have (or had, a few years ago) a variety of classes on offer, including erhu lessons. I took a class there and found that it was pretty decent.
I took erhu lessons in the big building just on the corner of Hsinyi and Jinshan Roads; I think it was the third floor? Anyway there was a music center there.
You could also contact a university with a music department and see if there are any students who could help you out. Possibility for language exchange instead of cash, depending – but cash would probably be cheaper in the long run.
Be aware, too, that you can probably sit in with almost any university Chinese orchestra (especially if it’s a club rather than a department of Chinese music). I used to play erhu for the Fujen orchestra. It was quite fun except that my chair was next to that horrible electronic oboe thing.
My, my, what a multi talented wonder you turn out to be, Ironlady.
I would think the Erhu would be rather difficult to play well. Good luck!
I’ve always wanted to get my hands on an erhu.

Yes, it is. If you notice, I carefully did not say I played it well.
I had a good time, though. And it seemed easier to carry than a guzhang.

…that’s what he said…!
Shout out to Debra
Thanks for the suggestions!
I live in Miaoli county but usually go to xinzhu every weekend. It would be ideal to find a teacher who will teach me over the internet 3 weeks out of 4. I have talked to a couple of teachers nearby and am not satisfied with their skill level. Does Xinzhu have a conservatory of music?
There is no conservatory of music. Chiao Tung has a music program but it’s geared towards composition. A number of the local schools have traditional music programs, my daughter studies erhu in elementary school, so you might try contacting them. In particular there are a couple arts oriented schools which you might try first - unfortunately I don’t remember their names but I’m sure they are listed on the department of education website. Also, Tsing Hua has music clubs which undoubtedly include traditional instruments. You might try them as well. AFAIK, music schools like Yamaha all concentrate on western instruments but there may be others I haven’t seen.
But if you are only studying over the internet couldn’t you find a teacher anywhere?
Good luck.
I want to get erhu lessons too, anyone have any suggestions?
