Maybe because most of Asia is poor and backwards? The undeveloped nations of Asia outnumber the Tigers, especially if you factor in population. Even large parts of China are underdeveloped once you venture beyond the gleaming east coast cities. Rural and small town China are third world.
Well, that seems âŠunsubstantiated. Your average Europeans perception of Japan is more likely to be supertrains, high-tech cars, or anime, than starving workers toiling away at garment sweatshops. Same, to a lesser effect, with Taiwan or South Korea. Even China is more likely to viewed as a coming competitor than peasants slogging through rice paddies.
Perceptions (justified or otherwise)-
Middle East: sand, oil, crazed terrorists.
South Asia: starving peasants toiling twelve hours a day in fields or factories.
Southeast Asia: some of the same, but more jolly sexy time for tourists.
East Asia: hi-tech.
