Everything you wanted to know about the YouBike

Next time try to use the lock or also you can return the bike and then rent a Youbike 1.0

I did that last Saturday . I was riding a Youbike 1.0 then I parked it and change to Youbike 2.0 in less than 15 minutes

However if you are in Taipei city this will cost you at least 5ntd extra and also be aware that there are less Youbike 1.0 parking spots, so you should check the map for available parking spots

I don’t get why they have the 15 minute cooldown? Can they not reduce it a little bit?

Let’s just add a 15 minute restriction for all forms of transportation

  • if you use a bus and then you leave the bus, then you can’t use the bus again for 15 minutes
  • if you use the MRT and then you leave the mrt, then you can’t use the MRT again for 15 minutes

Even better

  • if you’re walking along the sidewalk, and you leave the sidewalk, then you can’t use the sidewalk for 15 minutes.

Rules like this are usually the result of someone abusing the system in the past.

It’s not a regular rule 15 minutes? What is the regular rule? 5 minutes?

I know you can take a bike and then return it within 5 minutes in case it’s broken or something right?

The reason for the cooldown is because the first 15 or 30 minutes of any ride was until recently free. So yeah if you’re just doing a short stop, lock the bike to a tree or something.

This actually happens when sidewalks disappear.

Lol is that really the reason? They could not bother to code a lookup to check if you had borrowed another bike in the last 15 minutes?

Just my guess. Not sure why else they would have that restriction.

Also, I thought they had only dropped the first-30-free to 15, but I seem to get charged 5nt even for a < 15 min ride. Maybe I’m going over the 15 and not realize it

You guessed correctly. People would return the bike before the 30 minutes were up, and immediate rent the same bike again to get another free 30 minutes. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Be careful locking a youbike 2.0. Something might go wrong with the computer and you can’t unlock it.

I think since youbike 2.0 came to New Taipei City I have only locked them 3 times and each time something goes wrong. First time it failed to register that I locked the bike, luckily there was a guy refilling bikes at the station across the road. Second time it failed to unlock. Third time was the worst and put me off from locking them again. A part somehow broke when I unlocked it and it couldn’t connect to their server anymore. I could still ride the bike but when I returned it, it didn’t register. I didn’t realize until later when I got the message saying that I was going to be charged for long term rental. Had to call and they had to send someone out to check if the bike was still at the station I parked it at.

Yeah in this way the old-school lock-and-key approach to youbike 1.0 actually was more reliable.

Progress, right? :grimacing:

You can also get around the 15 min delay by using a different Easycard to unlock the second bike…

So you could cross Taipei in simple 15-minute hops for free! Genius!

I’m not sure but that may only work if you have another card on a different account. I have multiple cards on one account I haven’t tried it.

Youbike’s expansion in Southern Taiwan continues, with Pingtung joining in 2023. Specific locales with planned youbike stations will include Pingtung City, Chaozhou Township, Donggang Township, and Hengchun Township. It will replace the existing P-Bike system, one I’ve not tried.

One nice feature which may come in handy is that Pingtung’s use of 2.0 bikes will line up with Kaohsiung’s youbike system, with—according to the report below—no extra charge to move across the two systems.

It does seem to work with multiple cards on one account :grimacing:
