I recently had a conversation with a good friend from the US. He is a professor at a university in Taichung and has lived here for 20 years.
We went onto the topic of what’s happening in South Africa. He was telling me how he is in full support of the expropriation without compensation of land from white farmers as the land was taken from Africans without compensation.
I then asked him about America and its white farmers. He told me his family don’t own a farm and he’d be fine with the US government taking their land and distributing it to native Indians.
So I am wondering… what are your thoughts? Maybe other countries like Taiwan, Australia etc… should do the same. Let’s take back from those nasty whites lol. (As someone with aboriginal heritage I could benefit hugely on a financial level.)
Also FYI… despite our differences… we are good friends.
Who are those nasty white people who have taken land in Taiwan? Are you feeling guilty for something? Any deep confession coming up? Feel safe, here is a circle of trust
Which, at this point, is reportedly nothing regarding expropriation of land. Regarding the potential,:
The South African government can seize private property without compensation under limited circumstances. Section 12(3) of the Expropriation Act states:
It may be just and equitable for nil compensation to be paid where land is expropriated in the public interest, having regard to all relevant circumstances, including but not limited to—
(a) where the land is not being used and the owner’s main purpose is not to develop the land or use it to generate income, but to benefit from appreciation of its market value;
(b) where an organ of state holds land that it is not using for its core functions and is not reasonably likely to require the land for its future activities in that regard, and the organ of state acquired the land for no consideration;
(c) notwithstanding registration of ownership in terms of the Deeds Registries Act, 1937 (Act No. 47 of 1937), where an owner has abandoned the land by failing to exercise control over it despite being reasonably capable of doing so;
(d) where the market value of the land is equivalent to, or less than, the present value of direct state investment or subsidy in the acquisition and beneficial capital improvement of the land.
Doesn’t seem like anything there is that crazy, or even should be particularly controversial, other than #1, but with all the talk on this board about landlords hoarding vacant properties, seems like this board would be nodding approvingly. ;D
