Filing Taxes Online OUTSIDE of Taiwan

Long story short, I recently returned back to the UK and was told by my former employer that I would have to file my own taxes in May. She reassured me it was a quick an simple process and that I just needed to input my ARC number.

Turns out it couldn’t be more complicated. I’ve purchased a card reader and everything, but once I use my NHI card, it asks for a password. Once I try to set up a password online, then the NHI card isn’t read, and continues to show “reading, please wait”.

From what I understand, I will actually be owed taxes (though I’m sure that won’t matter).

My question is two fold: what am I supposed to do at this point and what repercussions are there if I simply don’t do anything?

Have you left Taiwan permanently or are you coming back?

In the former case you should have done it before you left. In the latter case I’d just do it when you come back, even if it’s late.

If you’ve overpaid, which is quite likely, I don’t see why you wouldn’t want it back?

Also, if you’ve left for good, perhaps that’s why your NHI card didn’t work?
