[For Americans] where do you fall politically?

I don’t know how to start a poll but I am curious as to whether you guys are right leaning, left leaning, right wing, left wing, centrist or whatever…

I’m a centrist btw.

which means what exactly? :idunno:

Most people probably think they’re the reasonable centrist, like everybody is in the middle class and a good driver.

I don’t know.

The only thing I like about Republican is that they oppose gun control laws, but everything else about them is complete crap.

I like Democrats on most issues except gun control, however I find that Democrats are not as “left wing” as they make themselves to be. They are really Republicans who represents blacks and hispanics, but for the most part they’re really just as right winged as Republicans.

If there’s any truly leftist party like there are in the EU in the US, that might be good, but then they get labeled as “socialist”.

I’m more Bernie Sander type, most young people in the US supported him by the way.

But I honestly don’t believe it matters what the majority of the Americans support, politics in the US is firmly in the hands of the elite.

Very few Democratic politicians make themselves out to be particularly left wing (there’s obviously some). The right wing media is who tends to do that.

But no. The “they’re all the same” position is lazy.

Nope.

The leftists and the Republicans both annoy me. And also for me to label myself as a liberal or a conservative would be lying to both myself and others.
Fringe far left folks would call a right winger but vast majority of people I talked to including moderately liberal/Democrat/left leaning people have told me I sound like a centrist

Most people here are extremely right wing.

EU is pretty left wing compared to the US. Even Democrats would be considered right wing in the EU.

Also EU is firmly against excessively long incarceration for crimes, or punishing someone who is in prison (as prison is the punishment, anymore than this is cruelty). California despite being a Democrat stronghold leads the US in mass incarceration and excessively long sentences for minor crimes. They’re famous for their 3 strike laws where people can end up with 25 year sentence for misdemeanors.

Even California style governance in many EU countries would horrify people there.

I think there’s a handful of right wingers, a handful of conspiracy nuts which sometimes get mistaken for right wing given the overlap in US politics these days, but I bet the majority of folks (many of whom don’t really post that much - this place is mostly the same voices (an echo chamber if you will)) span the political spectrum.

I don’t think that has anything to do with my post you’re responding to, but thank you for your thoughts. ;D

I don’t follow you.

Republicans in the US favor longer and longer sentences for minor crimes, because they’re backed by the prison industrial complex who profits off of a large prison population. Democrats claims to not favor that yet they do little to nothing to stop excessively long prison sentences, and in fact their strongholds have some of the largest prison populations in the country.

The EU is completely opposite in that regard, in that they believe excessively long prison sentences are not just and only creates a large population that is dependent on the state. They believe the money is better spent on stuff to reduce crime rather than having a bunch of people with 20-30 year sentences that costs massive amount of money to incarcerate. The EU also do not believe in using criminal records as a means to punish someone after they have served their sentence, but the US is almost universal in regards to keeping every little bit of criminal record, no matter how minor, public and the information is used to deny them jobs or housing.

Like I said, it matters not what people think because the US is no longer a government that is controlled by its people nor represents them.

Conservative on military spending and religious freedom. Liberal on everything else.

What does this mean?

How’s that conservative?

It means massive military spending, as Republican favors more and more money into their military to safeguard “freedom”.

Conservatives want to spend more money on the military.

Since 9/11, both parties have plowed money into the military. It’s one of the most bipartisan positions around.

There are only a handful of liberal hippies, whacky libertarians, and deficit hawks (ie probably more “conservatives” than liberals) that are making real calls for reduced military spending.

Democrats always want to cut the military budget first. See: Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Obama.
