If coming back to your home country is not an option then consider working for an foreign company in Taiwan. Get out of dead end EFL teaching and make something of yourself while the going is good.
Dell for example has jobs that are open! Another candidate is Apple with jobs that you can either do in Taiwan ROC or that would bring you back.
Now it would mean going back to your home country for a few years to get the required qualifications and/or experience but if you’re ambitious, flexible enough (and don’t have a mansion somewhere in Hualien that is tying you down) then go for it.
It would also do you some good and get you out of this place for a while…this can help you see Taiwan from a more objective point of view and allow you to genuinely decide if this island that’s smaller than Florida is right for you.
And if you happened to have been ambitious enough during your stay here that you picked up Mandarin then you’ve got a solid leg up for these potential foreign assignments.
Another solid career path for my fellow Americans on this front is the Foreign service. I have two friends who have chosen that route and not only are they living life in Asia but they have all the US government benefits and more importantly - a career that actually does keep advancing.
