I had an interview for a full-time English teaching job at a learning center in Taiwan. The manager said that 45,000 NTD is the base salary. however, I learned that English teachers are usually offered 60,000 minimum this year. Is the amount they gave fair?
No. That is shitty, just walk away and tell them you were offered 65,000 at another school.
Teachers I know of are on over 90,000 - 100,000 a month.
However, cram school is 60,000 ish (starting)
Also I’m guessing you’re not a native speaker if you were offered that?
What are your qualifications? What exactly does the job entail?
If you’re not a native speaker (preferably blonde, blue eyed, good looking, and young), no experience, no degree, no teaching experience, and they want you to play games for 10 hours a week, sounds good.
bachelor’s degree and non-native speaker. it’s a full-time position, m-f from 1-9. the salary seems unfair to me
that’s what i heard too. i know someone who’s also a non-native speaker whose salary is 60-ish that’s why i asked here just incase i get lowballed
That is certainly a lowball offer. If you sign that contract you will find yourself working 30 hours in the classroom and spending your weekends writing reports and grading homework.
Employers in Taiwan can be very exploitative especially to foreigners.
The only people paid that low that I’ve heard of are in Fulbright. People in Fulbright for some stupid reason think that’s a good deal because they think it’ll help their resume. They also only do it for one year as a stepping stone to what they view as other, more important things. They don’t see it as a real job. They also tend to come from families with plenty of wealth, so they don’t care how little money they’re paid.
Most fast food places in Taipei are pushing salaries into the high 30k/low 40k/month with clearly defined hours these days. Cram school pay should he better. At 8 hours of expected work/day for 5 days a week, I wouldn’t take anything less than 70k if you’re a non native speaker. 80k min if you’re a native speaker. Many of those full time positions turn into you are working the entire time you’re there and they expect you to do all your planning and grading on your own.
Also, if there lowballing you that much with this offer, imagine what they’re going to do once you get there
