Forgot to put cheese in fridge

Bought cheddar cheese in Costco last night. Put in my back pack, got home and forgot about it
Opened my bag this morning, and found it. Put it in the fridge

Nice cheese, but is it safe to eat after been in 30C heat overnight?

What a brick of it? If there’s not green hairy stuff growing on it, you’re good to go… kinda the whole point of cheese

Sliced cheese.

So check for green hairy stuff on it. Got it

I assume I have shortened the shelf life of it though

No problem. If you see mold growing on it, slice that bit off, and eat the rest.

Cheese is hardy stuff and is supposed to mature in room temperature settings anyway. The harder the cheese (like parmesan), the better it stands up to the elements.

Yeah, you’ve probably shortened the shelf life, but it’s safe. At this point, if I were you, I would split it into small portions in ziplock sandwich bags and freeze all but one bag, then thaw bags one by one as you need them.

Don’t cut it.

Bah! Good cheese is off anyway. Nothing to worry about.

HG

Good idea…Thanks

Milk products don’t become toxic when they go bad, AFAIK, they just taste bad and/or look gross. Meat’s different.

Do you mean cheese … or this sliced plastic wrapped highly processed and packed with preservatives substitute that is called cheese …? Either way you’re good to go …

Nah not the highly processed and packed type… yuk!!!

you got cheese?

The OP said it was cheddar cheese from Costco. If you’re talking Tilamook Cheddar (which they sell in Taiwan Costco), that stuff is outstanding. I loved it back home and was thrilled to see it here.

As for your question, I agree with everyone else: no problem at all. In fact, I often leave cheese in the fridge so long that I forget about it and when I discover it there’s mold on most edges, so I’ll just trim off all the edges and the inside seems just fine.

So I’ll trim it, eat the inside, put it back, forget about it again, discover it’s all moldy again, trim it again, eat some more, put back and repeat, often several times before I’ll finish a large block of cheese (since my wife doesn’t really eat cheese and I hardly cook any more).

It hasn’t killed me (or made me sick) yet, as far as I know.

Yep thats the one. Could not remember the brand

Yea, that stuff’s great. It may be pre-sliced, but it’s definitely not processed garbage. It’s the real deal. The slices are in two piles. I wrap each pile firmly in plastic wrap, then put both packs inside a ziplock, so I only need to open half of it at a time. They still get moldy eventually, but as I said I keep trimming and eating, trimming and eating anyway. I think Dragonbones suggested freezing cheese. I’ve never done that, but if that doesn’t harm it that’s a great solution too (freezing half of hte big hunk).

The price of fromage, and i do mean the real deal cheeze, is outrageous.
Especially here in Ontario, where it all reeks of high tariffs for the imports and price fixing for the domestics.
It’s the thin edge of the wedge, I say…!

:grandpa:

Wellcome is outrageous when it comes to price of cheese … 120gr of Gouda 165 NT$ = 1,320 NT$/kg … that’s gauging … I wonder how they get it sold, it’s about 3X the normal average price

Yeah, it freezes okay. Any aged cheese will freeze ok, and will be fine if you’re using it for sandwiches or in cooking. I’ve frozen fresh mozzarella too, and it was fine for shredding and cooking afterwards. Sometimes cheese will turn a bit crumblier after freezing, so your cheddar slices might be a bit more fragile after freezing, but that’s no big deal. Shredded cheeses freeze fine too, so if you want to buy one of those huge bags at Costco you can rebag and freeze usable portions. I haven’t tried freezing cottage cheese, ricotta, etc. though, and wouldn’t recommend trying it.

I always freeze the cheese I buy at COSTCO. The biggish ones I cut in portions and put them in special freezer bags -some Ziplock, local ones bought at the Post Office are OK, too. I take out the portions as I need them. No problem with cheddar, provolone, even mozzarela. I haven’t experimented with soft cheeses. As Dragonbones, I would not reccomend it. It would be like freezing sour cream!

I do the same with the big fish/meat/poultry trays: take out the stuff, wash it, season it, bag it, freeze it, use as necessary. Sometimes I cook it and then freeze it -saves a lot of time.

ps.
By the way, I often leave the cheese out…of the fridge…after opening…halfway through use… Really annoying, there is nothing you can do then. Out with the garbage it goes.
