Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) said yesterday at his birthday party that Taiwan should quietly and step by step make its way in-ternationally, and take the necessary turns where applicable. He also said that the people of Taiwan need not “care about the rights that often would come with the obligations” at this point in time.[/quote]
I totally agree with President Lee. The new Taiwanese idea is dated and we should be focused on promoting a Taiwanese Nationalist identity instead. After all, Chinese vote China and Taiwanese vote Taiwan. I am glad that Lee is trying to rebuild ties between Taiwan and Japan that have been destroyed by years of KMT despotism. Anyway, Happy Birthday President Lee, the George Washington of the Taiwanese Republic!
For introducing democracy and bringing power to the people, he has demonstrated his loyalty and service to all people living in Taiwan. One should keep in mind his contribution when making judgements.
