Four Days Until the Iraqi Election

YEAH baby!

Who’s next in line for freedom 2005??

Yahoo Pictures of Iraqui election turnout

Both Fox & CNN are calling turn out at 72%…very impressive.

what most people forget is that the sunni areas where all the violence is going on represent just a small fraction of iraq. even if NO sunnis voted, they only represent 20% or so of the population. the kurds and shiites are experiencing very heavy turnout to make up for the small turnout in the sunni areas.

And, lest we forget, the Sunnis were heavily into Saddam.

Didn’t vote?

They’re probably MORE scared to vote then the Shiites!

In excess of 70% voter turnout… freaking awesome!

Do I remember some folks months ago arguing that the Iraqis didn’t want democracy? :unamused:

Yeah, right… those insurgents are real heros… eh? They’re fighting for the Iraqi people, right? Yeah, we’re the enemy of the Iraqi people, right?

Some of you folks need to get a goddamned clue. :unamused:

The results are wonderful enough to celebrate in and of themselves. Please feel joy for the Iraqi people, not for the opportunity to thumb your nose at fellow Forumosans.

Just wondering if Saddam hasn’t been convicted of anything yet if he was allowed/entitled to vote.

Our hearts are big enough to do both.

There wouldn’t have been enough security available at the polling place to protect him from his own people.

How ironic. Despite the bombs and guns, the voter turnout in Iraq just might equal or beat the US or EU.

What a bunch of lazy asses we are

It was great watching the elections today, totally uplifting.

OH HAPPY DAY

Oh happy day
Oh happy day
When Jesus washed
Oh when He washed
Mmm, when He washed
All my sins away
Oh happy day

All that’s going on and you worry about the fairness of Saddam’s voting rights??

Dude, where are your priorities?

Or is this how you too see the world Broon?

Iraqi Voting Disrupts News Reports of Bombings
by Scott Ott
(2005-01-30) – News reports of terrorist bombings in Iraq were marred Sunday by shocking graphic images of Iraqi “insurgents” voting by the millions in their first free democratic election.

Despite reporters’ hopes that a well-orchestrated barrage of mortar attacks and suicide bombings would put down the so-called ‘freedom insurgency’, hastily-formed battalions of rebels swarmed polling places to cast their ballots – shattering the status quo and striking fear into the hearts of the leaders of the existing terror regime.

Hopes for a return to the stability of tyranny waned as rank upon rank of Iraqi men and women filed out of precinct stations, each armed with the distinctive mark of the new freedom guerrillas – an ink-stained index finger, which one former Ba’athist called “the evidence of their betrayal of 50 years of Iraqi tradition.”

Journalists struggled to put a positive spin on the day’s events, but the video images of tyranny’s traitors choosing a future of freedom overwhelmed the official story of bloodshed and mayhem.

No.

I’ll joyfully thumb my nose at fellow Forumosans and anyone else who has been predicting a failure and who has been saying that the Iraqis don’t want democracy. :unamused:

[quote]I bow in respect and awe to the men and women of our people who, armed only with faith and hope are going to the polls under the very real threats of being blown to pieces. These are the real braves; not the miserable creatures of hate who are attacking one of the noblest things that has ever happened to us. Have you ever seen anything like this? Iraq will be O.K. with so many brave people, it will certainly O.K.; I can say no more just now; I am just filled with pride and moved beyond words. People are turning up not only under the present threat to polling stations but also under future threats to themselves and their families; yet they are coming, and keep coming. Behold the Iraqi people; now you know their true metal. We shall never forget the meanness of these bas

As my dear Ol’ Father used to say…“Perspective laddie…its all in your perspective.”

The interesting part will be when the irresistible force of the Iraqi peoples’ drive for self-determination meets the immoveable object of the American occupation.

How long were we in Grenada? Did we occupy Kuwait? Expand on your argument please. It will be entertaining to be able to come back and quote you this time next year.

Sure, Comrade Stalin, you can find a couple of examples of places that the US liberated and then left without turning them into oppressed imperial vassal states.

But when you look at the big picture, spook is absolutely right.

  • The German drive for self-determination met the immoveable object of the American occupation. Result: Germany remains a US military occupied territory, bereft of democracy, political freedom, material prosperity, or any kind of real independence. This is what you get when the US invades your country.

  • The Italian drive for self-determination met the immoveable object of the American occupation. Result: Italy remains a US military occupied territory, bereft of democracy, political freedom, material prosperity, or any kind of real independence. This is what you get when the US invades your country.

  • The Japanese drive for self-determination met the immoveable object of the American occupation. Result: Japan remains a US military occupied territory, bereft of democracy, political freedom, material prosperity, or any kind of real independence. This is what you get when the US invades your country.

Bottom line: historically, being invaded and occupied by the US has been a nightmare for these countries. This is also part of the reason that those of their neighbors who were lucky enough to avoid US occupation (North Korea, and the nations of Eastern Europe, for example) have been flourishing democracies for so much longer, and enjoy democracy, freedom, and prosperity to an extent that US occupied territories such as Germany, Italy and Japan can only envy.

 Thanks Hobbes for making it all clear!
