Four Days Until the Iraqi Election
It was great watching the elections today, totally uplifting.
Yeah it was. And those purple-inked fingers were like the most beautiful art.
Just wondering if Saddam hasn’t been convicted of anything yet if he was allowed/entitled to vote.

Saddam Did Not Vote in Iraq Poll, But Was Eligible

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein did not vote in Iraq’s historic election but he could have done if he had turned up at a polling station, officials said on Tuesday.

“If Saddam had wanted to vote he would have been entitled to do so but he would have had to go to a polling station in person,” said Farid Ayar, spokesman for Iraq’s Electoral Commission.
Certainly Citizen Capet–er, that is, Citizen Al-Tikriti should have been allowed to vote.
Citizens of Al Mudiryiah were subjected to an attack by several militants today who were trying to punish the residents of this small town for voting in the election last Sunday.
The citizens responded and managed to stop the attack, kill 5 of the attackers, wounded 8 and burned their cars.
3 citizens were injured during the fire exchange. The Shiekh of the tribe to whom the 3 wounded citizens belong demanded more efforts from the government to stop who he described as “Salafis”.
one of the more heartening stories i’ve seen out of iraq in a while. democracy cannot succeed in iraq if the iraqi people won’t fight for it. perhaps this is the beginning of the iraqis standing up for themselves.

Flipper, that is indeed heartening.

Good stuff.
Maybe you’re like me and have opposed the Iraq war since before the shooting started – not to the point of joining any peace protests, but at least letting people know where you stood.

You didn’t change your mind when our troops swept quickly into Baghdad or when you saw the rabble that celebrated the toppling of the Saddam Hussein statue, figuring that little had been accomplished and that the tough job still lay ahead.

By now, you might have even voted against George Bush – a second time – to register your disapproval.

But after watching Sunday’s election in Iraq and seeing the first clear sign that freedom really may mean something to the Iraqi people, you have to be asking yourself: What if it turns out Bush was right, and we were wrong?
