MIT is going put free interactive courses online (spring 2012) … good to know … you can earn certificates/credentials for online study.

They’ve had the free courses online for several years now. What’s changing is that they now are CONSIDERING CHARGING online students who want to take the classes for a certificate of completion (not for a degree program). (If the student didn’t want any sort of acknowledgement, then he/she could still take the online class free of charge, as with the existing OCW program.)

They don’t yet have the details worked out, and there is no information yet on whether other universities would accept the certificates as any sort of transfer credits. Still, it’s a positive step, IMHO. I’ve been wanting to get a BSEE for a while now, but the lack of part-time and online programs makes that hard.
