We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ralph J. Cicerone, President of the US National Academy of Sciences, will visit Taiwan as “Academia Sinica Lecturer” and will give two lectures on March 25 and 26, 2014. The first lecture, entitled “Global Climate Change Forced by Greenhouse Gases from Human Activities”, will be given in Academia Sinica. The second lecture, “Protecting the Ozone Layer was Easier than Stabilizing Earth’s Climate: Economics and Politics”, will be delivered in National Taiwan University.
Dr. Ralph J. Cicerone is a highly respected atmospheric scientist. His research in atmospheric chemistry, climate change and energy has helped shape science and environmental policy at the highest levels both nationally in the USA, and internationally. Throughout his research career, Dr. Cicerone has received many awards and honors for his scientific work. The Franklin Institute recognized his fundamental contributions to the understanding of greenhouse gases and ozone depletion by selecting him as the 1999 laureate for Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science. The prestigious Bower Award also recognized his public policy leadership in protecting the global environment. The American Geophysical Union awarded Dr. Cicerone its 2002 Roger Revelle Medal for outstanding research contributions to the understanding of Earth’s atmospheric processes, biogeochemical cycles, and other key elements of the climate system. In 2004, the World Cultural Council honored him with the Albert Einstein World Award in Science, one of science’s most distinguished awards.
Dr. Cicerone is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Academy of Sciences. He is a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, the Real Academia de Ciencias, and the Royal Society. Dr. Cicerone was elected Honorary Academician of the Academia Sinica in 2010 and will receive the conferment of the Honorary Academician Badge before delivering his first lecture in Academia Sinica.
In his two lectures in Taiwan, the distinguished atmospheric scientist will address the most pressing problems of our future. We urge you not to miss his remarkable insights.
