Fri , July 17 at Jack Studio: FUYAJOH (JP)

Formed in Tokyo in 2022, Fuyajoh (不夜城) is one of the most exciting new names to emerge from Japan’s underground music scene in recent years. Drawing from the expansive soundscapes of post-rock and the emotional intensity of post-black metal, the band fuses screamo, alternative rock, chaotic hardcore, and noise into a distinctive sonic identity that balances violence and beauty in equal measure. Within their dense wall of sound created by a triple-guitar assault, listeners can experience both storm-like waves of crushing distortion and delicate, melancholic melodies, establishing Fuyajoh as one of the most recognizable rising acts in Tokyo’s post-rock and post-black metal landscape.

Fuyajoh is often regarded as a symbol of the new generation of Japanese screamo. While traditional screamo was heavily shaped by the American underground hardcore movement of the 1990s, Fuyajoh belongs to a newer lineage forged in the 2020s by bands such as Asunojokei and envy. Their music organically blends Asunojokei’s dreamlike post-black metal aesthetics, the emotional catharsis of modern envy, and the melodic sensibilities unique to Japanese rock. The result is a style marked by progressive song structures, fluid dynamics, and rich layers of expression, presenting a brighter, more hopeful interpretation of screamo that stands in stark contrast to the despair and darkness often associated with the genre.

The band first introduced their artistic vision with the release of DEMO2023 in 2022, offering an early glimpse into their fusion of post-black metal and screamo. In 2023, they released their debut EP, Placenta, which firmly established their musical identity. Built upon a foundation of screamo, Placenta refuses to be confined by any single genre. At times, its songs unfold through vast, wave-like post-rock soundscapes; at others, they erupt with the ferocity of black metal. Irregular rhythms borrowed from chaotic hardcore and layers of noise further heighten the intensity, creating an unpredictable and dramatic listening experience. The contrast between the monumental guitar wall generated by three guitarists and the beauty of their shimmering arpeggios makes Placenta one of the most distinctive and unconventional releases to emerge from Tokyo’s hardcore scene.

In 2024, Fuyajoh released the digital single Diamond and organized their first self-produced event. The following year saw the release of another standalone single, Otherside of the Moon, followed by the announcement of the cassette split release Fuyajoh / Fuyajoh / Never Confuse Loneliness With Isolation Split, scheduled for September and featuring fellow artists from Tokyo’s underground scene. In just a few short years, Fuyajoh has evolved from a promising newcomer into one of the most compelling representatives of Japan’s new generation of alternative hardcore and post-black metal. By combining the sincerity of screamo, the sweeping narratives of post-rock, and the emotional torrents of post-black metal, they continue to carve out a unique path within the modern Japanese heavy music landscape.
