Friendly gay cafes or bars in Taipei?

Hi,

I’m visiting Taipei for about 6 weeks (and will be coming again next year for longer), and wondered if anyone can recommend any good gay cafes or bars.

I dont know if such a thing exists here, but I’m just looking for some friendly places to maybe meet some locals and have a chat, maybe make some friends…? Not looking for anything beyond that!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cheers,
Ben

I’ve always liked watersheds, just behind the fire station at the corner of Anhe and Xinyi. It’s not really a gay bar, but it’s certainly gay friendly.

:noway: Maoman…I had no idea. Great cover with the wife and kid-on-the-way thing. Next time I get you a bloody mary, I’ll exchange the celery stick for a little umbrella.

OK…off to temp…(I was going to insert a ‘wink’ emoticon but um, well, you know…in the light of this revelation).

Stop flirting with Maoman, Bob. :unamused:

ben_gb, there are plenty - you should get some more inside knowledge from likeminded Forumosans soon.

The Watershed, the place Maoman mentioned, is quite hard to find so be warned. Here’s a link to an article in a local mag. taiwanfun.com/north/taipei/n … ershed.htm

((Note to all the cheeky wankers on Forumosa - piss off, I’m straight.))

Ben gb,
Here are two places which you might like to try,

Cafe Fresh
Address: 2F, 7 Jinshan South. Rd., Sec. 2, Taipei City 金山南路二段7號2F
Tel: (02) 2358 7701 Hours: 8 pm to 3:30 am (up to 5 am on Saturdays)
Fresh is a popular foreigner-friendly gay bar where there is a good chance of meeting “potato queens” (Asian males attracted to Causacian men). There are several levels, from first floor bar, to lounge, dance floor, and a gardened verandah.
The Source
Address: 1- 2 Roosevelt Rd., Sec. 1, Taipei City (near CKS Memorial Hall MRT Station, Exit 4) 台北市羅斯福路一段1-2號 Tel: (02)3393-1678, 33931789
Hours: 7pm-5am, Happy hour: 7pm-11pm.
This bar/disco/restaurant is another multi-floor place popular with foreigners, both gay and mixed; the first floor is the main bar area, the second floor is the dance area (playing mostly house, electronic and hip-hop music) and the third is a quieter chill-out area. The Source is quieter than Fresh, and has more regulars.

There used to be a little cafe/bookshop in the alley behind the Taipower Building. Facing the Taipower building go down the alley on the right hand side, then turn right at the end of that alley, look out on your left and you should see it.

Well, you’ll see it if it still exists. I used to live round the corner from there but haven’t been past for four years.

Watersheds or Fresh are good places to start out. Grandma’s Titties, I mean Grandma Nitti’s, used to have a mixed brunch crowd–not sure what it is like these days.

New open-air gay cafe/bars:

Both of them are located in Ximending in the area directly behind the Red Theater.

MRT blue line, Ximen Exit # 2 or 6, I think, and you’ll see the Red Theater. Just walk down the walkway to the left of the Red Theater and you’ll hear the house music. It’s a nice, cozy al fresco atmosphere with plenty of seating.

Here’s a link to Utopia’s listing: The place is called “Cafe Dalida”. Scroll down past “The Beach” (which is actually a mixed bar) and you’ll see it.

Cafe Dalida
2370-7833

They were opened by former Fresh employees.

Potato queens? Are you shitting me?

I’m SO out of touch with you modern folks – I’ve been referring for years to people who race around in Japanese cars with silly after-market cosmetics stuck to them as rice queens. To their face, on more than one occasion. What MUST they have thought of me?

Ha ha!! i only know this cause my ex gf who is taiwanese used to joke about being a potato queen.
I always remember those cars being referred to as “rice rockets” back in the states… funny!

We should check with Irish Stu - He’s the Potato King, and knows all the in’s and out’s of tatters.

Holy sheee-*at sandman now I’m doin’ a doubletake

a poutine queen = 1. Poutine queen :astonished:

Used primarily in Canada, poutine queen refers to a gay male who is primarily attracted to French Canadian men.

Call me a poutine queen if you will, but that André Boisclair is quite a dish!

BLAME CANADA! :saywhat:

http://www.outintaiwan.com contains links to a bunch of gay bars and what the gay community thinks of them.

ok, why do all the ‘straight’ people know where all the gay bars are…hmmm… :hubba:

Happened upon a place called “Posh” near Shi-Da the other day. Taipower Building, one alley south of an Italian joint called Cosi e Cosi (which happens to have really yummy pizza). The cafe is a little overpriced and was full of definitely straight Taiwanese fashionistas (girls), but there was a huge rainbow sign reading “we are everywhere” so I’m going to take it that Posh is gay friendly.
