Frozen Onion Rings

Does anyone know where to buy frozen onion rings? I always bought them at RT Mart but they disappeared from their freezer a few weeks ago. I tried Wellcome but none there. Anyone know any place else that sells them?

Can’t speak for any of the other branches, but I have bought the McCain frozen onion rings in the Hualien Carrefour in the past. They were awful, I thought. Threw them away.

Yeah, they have the McCain ones in Carrefour in general, don’t think you got too many other options.

Thanks totallytika and TheLostSwede. I found them at Carrefour thanks to you.

Apologies Dragonbones, I did not see this note when posting my original message. I guess is really belonged in the food forum. Will post there next time.

No problem. It’ll get moved eventually, when the forum is working better. BTW, it’s very easy to make up some onion ring batter, slice an onion, and fry your own. I recommend you try it.

The onion rings you find here in the market are nothing more than shit. (excuse the vulgar reference,) but I really think it is accurate) Why don’t you simply do it right? If you are not willing to make the dip mix, try Costco pancake/waffle mix. Dilute it a bit with milk and dip the freshly sliced rings in the batter. Deep fry and enjoy. It’s the real deal and 100% better than the marketed crap that is nothing more than mashed fabricated onion rings in a batter.

Wow such vitriol at my poor little onion rings. It may seem trivial but let me explain. I am a recent convert to onion rings, so therefore a newbie. I am a french fry addict and used to consume white potatoes abundantly (being of Irish decent it is in my genes). Reaching the age of fourty somewhat sooner than expected it eventually started to take a heavy toll on my waistline. This year I have tried to significantly cut back on all things white (white potatoes, white rice, white bread, white sugar) and it has made a noticable difference (I fit in my clothes again). I began substituting Onion rings for french fries and it has worked very well.

Both recommendations call for frying, which I don’t do with the store bought ones. I simply put them in the oven on some tin foil and they are ready in 12 minutes. I want to avoid the oil factor as it is another weight/health issue. I like the onion rings at TGI Fridays but they are deep fried and pretty oily.

Another reason I do this is the only clean-up involved is to remove the foil from the oven and throw it away. I hate washing dishes and will do anything I can to avoid creating dirty ones. A simple plate of scrambled eggs creates 5 or 6 kitchen items to wash. (As a side issue, a thread I have been meaning to start and may soon based on these comments is why, oh why, are dishwashers so scarce in Taiwan? I would give anything for a small, portable one that I could run a couple of times a week instead of washing them by hand for an hour at a time.) Both preparation and clean-up issues speak to the fact that I work long hours and come home late and don’t have much time/energy for either.

I am a resonably good cook but I have never tried onion rings on my own. I don’t see how those made with pancake batter could be baked in the oven, I envision it running all over the baking sheet. Am I wrong? Any more direction in recipies or prep advice would be appreciated.

Btw, thanks for your feedback. I have gotten excellent answers on other issues in the past from Dragonbones and Enigma in the past in the food forum and perhaps that is where this thread now belongs.

One last note, I posted in the Costco thread recently about not finding one of my favorite food products there and sure enough this past week the frozen onion rings returned to RT Mart’s freezer. Life can be exhausting running from Costco to Jason’s to RT Mart to Carrefour to the Breeze Center, all to find different food products you crave.
