They don’t really know.
In my case, there was a tumor in the appendix (rare, but thankfully benign) and some other stuff going on. But AFAIK the most common cause of appendicitis is blockage of the little entranceway to the appendix, usually by, um, nitrogenous excrement produced by the body itself.
