Getting the STANK off my DriZaBone

So last year the mildew got to my trusty oilskin, especially the leather collar, and I can’t get it out, hung it for weeks outside and it’s still rank.
I know I can’t wash it conventionally or it’ll lose its waterproofing capability, anyone know any tricks?
I should be wearing it right now.

“The best way to remove mould is to hang your coat in full, hot sunshine…”

so essentially, you’re screwed.
My oilskin coat has developed a foul smell and there is mould on the coat. How do I remove these?

The foul smell is caused by mould growing in the fabric. The best way to remove mould is to hang your coat in full, hot sunshine for a good couple of weeks.

If you do not have a suitable climate, a solution of white vinegar and water will also kill mould/mildew. Mix one part vinegar to two parts of water and spray or sponge on to the mould. More than one application may be needed depending on the extent of the mould.

Once you have removed the mould, the coat will need a wash (see step 1 of next question)

Sunlight evaporates the oil/wax coating. If the oil has evaporated from your coat, you may need to apply some Jacaru garment dressing to maintain water repellency (see next question)
We haven’t had sunshine for 3 weeks so hanging it outside will only make it worse. Wait till it’s sunny again and try.

Here’s some info from Driza-Bone:
If your Driza-Bone does become mouldy simply hand wash it and brush it down with a stiff brush. Then hang it in the sun to kill the mould. If this doesn’t work, follow the reproofing instructions above.

We have all the answers to your garment care questions. If you can’t find the answer you want, please e-mail us at sales@drizabone.com.au
On that same page, they tell you “How to reproof your oilskin coat or vest.” Here’s the URL:

Driza-Bone also sells detergent for oilskin and wool. They claim it stops mold and mildew, but I don’t know whether “stops” means “gets rid of” or merely “prevents.” Anyway, here’s the URL: drizaboneclothing.co.uk/stor … rgent.html

The smell gives it “character.”

Wear it with pride.

(just tell people you’re really an Aussie - they’ll understand)
